MS4911 - NMEA/MODBUS TCPIP Converter Module

The MS4911 module allows you to encapsulate any message in the NMEA
protocol, arriving through a RS485 type serial port, within a function 43 of the
MODBUS TCPIP protocol, available through an Ethernet cable interface via a
10Base-T connector.

IoT CLOUD connection

Added to this feature, the module has the ability to provide the same
information through a platform in CLOUD IoT and store it to provide histories at
any time.

Internal structure

Internally, the module consists of 2 processors, one in charge of interfacing the

physical Ethernet connection through a Socket normally on port 502 and the
other in charge of allowing access via Wifi, automatically placing the NMEA
information available in CLOUD IoT and its database for historical .

Configuration via Web Server

Both processors have an access to their internal WebServer that allows the configuration of their parameters. In the
case only Server via Wifi, it is necessary that it is connected to an Access Pointer to provide its access via Wifi. In the
case of the cable Ethernet processor, it is only possible to access your Server through a Switch connected to an
Ethernet Network.

Internal message processing

In its internal structure, the processor in charge of receiving the NMEA code via an RS485 serial interface is even in
charge of maintaining the connection with our MQTT Server in CLOUD via a Wifi provided by the customer. You can
use your GSM modules with AP/Wifi interface.
This processor in question is in charge of receiving a number of NMEA messages and storing in its circulating queue for
a while.
The second processor in charge of executing the Stack MODBUS TCPIP system routines maintains an internal
communication between the two processors and whenever an external request via MODBUS TCPIP on its Socket
through port 502 is made, it makes an internal request to the other processor and this one for in turn, it removes a
message from its internal queue and transmits it to this processor, which encapsulates this message in the MODBUS
protocol of function 43.
This first processor queue is dynamically updated by the external device that generates the NMEA messages delivered
to its RS485 serial port.

O acesso a página de configuração da interface MODBUS/TCPIP, através de login “admi” e senha “ms4911”, permite
que o usuário modifique parametros mais inportantes:

1. Endereço de Acesso da sua página de configuração: “IP Port”, normalmente porta 80

2. Habilitar o uso do servidor DHCP do Switch: “Abilita DHCP”, normalmente selecionado
3. Porta de acesso do Socket de acesso NMEA TCPIP: “Socket Port”, normalmente 30

MS4911 – NMEA 0183 (RS485) converter module

for MODBUS TCP/IP.

1. WebServer service via Wifi for functional

configuration of parameters with access
password.
2. Power from 7 to 35 Vdc
3. RS485 type serial communication input for
NMEA 0183 protocol transport.
4. RS485 type serial communication output for
MODBUS protocol (optional).
5. 10Base-T communication port for Ethernet
Socket TCP/IP communication.
6. Industrial ABS type housing for DIN type
fastening, dimensions 90x75x55mm.

NOTE:
1. The RS485 Half Duplex (2 wires) Serial
port, despite being bi-directional, is always in
“input” mode or in listening mode for NMEA
codes.
2. System processes only NMEA protocol other type of serial data information will be discarded.
3. The MODBUS TCPIP protocol is implemented only for error responses and FUNCTION 43 – READ DEVICE
IDENTIFICATION which in this implementation is used to transport a NMEA 0183 sentence, the other functions 16, 15,
6, 5, 3, 2 and 1 are not are implemented in this application.
4. Any need to activate these functions can be ordered from the factory.
5. NMEA sentences have a limitation of up to 245 characters, if longer they will be discarded by the firmware.
6. The access connections via Socket Port at address 30 serves to obtain the NMEA sentences directly over the
Ethernet Network without the need for the MODBUS protocol, removing this sentence from the internal queue of the
system, but the same is concurrent with the other access via MODBUS TCPIP.

Procedure for Stack TCPIP Processor Configuration Recovery:

If for some reason access to the WebServer

page of the internal processor responsible
for Stack TCPIP access is lost, you can still
access it using a PC directly connected to
the module's Ethernet port.
Then configure the PC's Ethernet cable
connection to work with DHCP, go to
"Change adapter options", select the
currently active adapter and select its
"Property" then search and edit by the
"Property" button the "IP Protocol Version 4
(TCP/IPv4)" and check "Use the following IP
address:" configure the access IP with the
same range as the IP that is on the
module's display, just change the last
number to 1, then set the " Mask (MASK)”
as 255.255.255.0, now in the “Default
Gateway” enter exactly the IP presented on
the module's display. Ready now on this
same PC, go to a browser and type the
module's IP and now you will be able to
access the module's sie again.
