Cells at Work

Episode 1
This episode is an introduction to the series. In the human body where there are
37.2 trillion cells working, the 2 main protagonists of this show was shown. AE3803, a
new Red Blood Cell who is constantly getting lost and U-1146, a Neutrophil White Blood
Cell. In the midst of things, a bacteria known as the Pneumococcus invaded which was
eliminated by the Neutrophils, but one managed to escape. In an unfortunate fate,
AE3803 met the bacteria, which was then chased by the Neutrophil. The
Pneumococcus escaped through a bacterial capsule. Helper T Cell alerted the Killer T
Cells which made fun of AE3803, U-1146 advised to ignore them. They arrived at the
lungs where the bacteria was hiding in the box AE3803, the receptor helped U-1146 get
alerted in which the y have cornered him. They then managed to get rid of him through
sneezing.
Important Terms Definition
Red Blood Cells The red blood cells are responsible for
carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide with
the use of blood circulation. They get their
colors from the amount of hemoglobin.
White Blood Cells The white blood cells are responsible for
eliminating foreign substances from
outside such as bacteria and viruses.
Neutrophils Neutrophils are type of white blood cell
that comprises half of the white blood cell
in the blood.
Pneumococcus Pneumococcus is a type of bacteria. They
can divide and is also known as the
bacteria of the respiratory. These bacteria
can trigger pneumonia and other
diseases.
Lymphocytes Lymphocytes are associated with white
blood cells.
Helper T Cells Helper T Cells are commanders who
formulate appropriate attack strategies
based on the enemy/bacteria when
notified.
Killer T Cell (Cytotoxic T Cells) Killer T Cells kills virus-infected cells,
cancer cells and the like and mobilize
under the order of the Helper T Cell.

Episode 2
AE3803 was just doing her job when she came across AA5100. AA5100 offered
to help AE3803 as she got lost again, and while doing so, they came across a group of
platelets who was washing the fibrin. As the 2 red blood cells continued walking, a huge
explosion occurred, caused by an Abrasion. It left a huge hole which sucked a lot of the
cells nearby. A huge hoard of bacteria then arrived and invaded, and which the white
blood cells came to an aid. As the red blood cells were evacuating, they came to a dead
end due to venous valve. As they were cornered, U-1146 managed to get rid of them.
Back to the hole, Staphylococcus Aureus was leading the charge and commanding
them. After U-1146 and other white blood cells assembled to defeat Staphylococcus
Aureus, they were outmatched. But then came Macrophages and Monocytes, and later,
the lymphocytes. The platelets also came which helped cover the hole known as blood
clotting with the use of fibrin which left more moving room for the immune cells. This
allowed them to defeat the bacteria. A lot of red blood cells and white cells were caught
up in the fibrin and was about to undergo Secondary Hemostasis.
Important Terms Definition
Platelets Platelets are responsible for the
aggregation when the blood vessels are
damaged. Responsible for blood clotting.
Abrasion A wound formed when the skin is scraped
and is deeper than the epidermis.
Vacuole Valve Prevents blood from backing up and
keeps the blood stream in one-way.
Coagulation Factors Substances necessary to coagulate the
blood.
Fibrin Proteins involved in clotting the blood.
Blood Clotting A process by platelets to stop the
bleeding.
Staphylococcus Aureus Are antigen residing in the skin and
pores. Are highly toxic and can cause
skin infection, food poisoning,
pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, and the
like if it invades.

Episode 3
The episode starts of in a “dark alley” where a Naïve T Cell is patrolling. He then
came across “zombies” which represents a cell infected by the Influenza Virus. He was
almost caught when U-1146 came to his aid though migration. Later, a macrophage
came to an aid. The “zombies” have then invaded the town which Killer T Cells and a
Memory T Cell were deployed to eliminate them. Naïve T Cell was asked to help but he
cannot, and after getting scolded, he ran away. He reached the Dendritic Tree where he
came across a Dendritic Cell. After a talk, Naïve T Cell was nurtured and was ready to
help. Back in the town, B-cell also came to an aid. But it wasn’t enough as they were
outnumbered. The immune cells were then cornered when the Effector T Cell (former
Naïve T Cell) came to aid them. A type A influenza then appeared where they were
wondering why it was a tougher opponent.
Important Terms Definition
Naive T Cell Also known as an immature T Cell which
has never encountered an antigen.
Migration Ability to move freely though the system.
Influenza Virus These can trigger influenza. It is
separated into 3 categories, A, B, and C.
Symptoms include fever that could reach
over 100 degrees, headaches, joint pain,
and muscle cramping.
Macrophages A type of white blood cell. Captures and
kills foreign substances such as bacteria,
and finds antigens and immunity
information. They act as a cleaner, tidying
dead cells and bacteria.
Memory T Cell Is part of killer T cells, they are equipped
to attack again when an enemy/bacteria
attack again.
Dendritic Cells Present bacteria that have invaded the
body and fragments of viral infection.
They feature protrusions and has the
ability to nurture Naïve T Cells.
Effector T Cell The Naïve T Cell after being nurtured
B-Cell Also known as the Antibody-producing
cells, is a type of lymphocytes that fights
antigens using a weapon called
“antibodies.”
Type A Influenza Features numerous internal mutations
and is prone to triggering epidemic on a
global scale.

Episode 4
This episode starts of in the stomach with AE3803 and U-1146. They later then
came across Eosinophil who was having a hard time eliminating a bacteria. U-1146
then helped in eliminating it, which caused other cells to doubt Eosinophil as a white
blood cell. There was then an alert where other bacteria invaded. U-1146 and AE3803,
alongside Eosinophil responded. Mast Cell is also responding to the alert, releasing
Histamines. The main cast met Basophil, which talked to them. Enteritis Vibris, the
bacteria that invaded, terrorized the cells. As Eosinophil took care of him, she had a
hard time which U-1146 came to an aid, giving more doubt Eosinophil. Later, an alert
about a gigantic bacteria coming was alerted. Anisakis, the gigantic bacteria, invaded
the cells. U-1146 was not able to defeat it, whilst Eosinophil, stood up and defeated it.
Every cell in the area, then gave credit to her.
Important Terms Definition
Eosinophil A type of white blood cell that comprises
only a small percent of it. They multiply
during allergic reactions or parasitic
infections. They are weak but are capable
of Phagocytosis.
Mast Cells (Fat Cells) Releases mediators such as histamine
and leukotriene. Has nothing to do with
fats.
Basophil A type of white blood cell that only
comprises 1% of all. Releases histamines
when encountering specific pathogen,
triggering an allergic reactions.
Enteritis Vibris A bacteria that normally resides in sea
water. Consuming seafood contaminated
by it can lead to contagious enteritis vibrio
food poisoning with stomach pains and
the like.
Anisakis A parasite in marine animals which
accelerates the immunity system. When
consumed an anisakis infested food, it
can invade the stomach and the lining of
the intestine, causing food poisoning with
severe stomach pain and vomiting.

Episode 5
The episode starts off with a meteor like thing, bringing in Cedar Pollen
Allergens. This caused the Cedar Pollen Allergens to multiply and invade the body. U-
1146 and other white blood cells helped in eliminating these allergens. U-1146 meets
up with Memory Cell, which tells a legend about a great disaster which he theorized that
these allergens is the start of it. B cell joins in the process of eliminating these allergens.
Mast Cell then learns about this and brings out the histamines to eliminate these. She
saw that is it was not enough, hence, making her bring out more which then caused a
flood of histamines. Mast cell meets up with the B cell which turned into an argument as
B cell blames Mast blood for this. A capsule like ball then came which brings out
Steroids, attempting to eliminate everyone. Luckily, it ran out of battery.
Important Terms Definition
Cedar Pollen Allergens Allergies that occur when the immunity
system overreacts to a certain substance.
Memory Cell Lymphocytes that retains memories of
pathogens. They are prepared for a 2nd
invasion from the same antigen or virus.
Histamine It dilates the vascular endolethial cells,
allowing white blood cells to protect the
cell at a higher rate,
Steroids Also known as the “Adrenocartical
Hormones.” A drug with powerful anti-
inflammatory and immunosuppressive
effects.

Episode 6
The episode starts off with AE3803 doing her job and coming across the bone
marrow. She then saw a bunch of young red blood cells getting nurtured by
macrophages. She then remembered her younger days, from the Hemopoietic Stem
Cells to a precursor cell in the bone marrow where she was nursed by macrophages.
They were taught about their future jobs, where she was still lost like usual. They were
trained to run away from a mascot bacteria where AE3803 got lost and saw the outside
window. A real bacteria, Pseudomonas, saw her and followed her where she was
helped by a myelocyte. A neutrophil and macrophage came to aid them. The next scene
showed a cancer cell in the town where U-1146 and Killer T Cell eliminated it. Natural
Killer Cell also came where a normal cell guided them to a mansion. NK and the cell
went the other way of U-1146 and Killer T Cell due to anger.
Important Terms Definition
Precursor Cells Cells before they are differentiated form
stem cells into certain other cells.
Hemopoietic Stem Cells Cells that produces blood cells, such as
red blood cells, white blood cells,
platelets, etc.
Macrophage They play a crucial role in differentiation
and mutation of precursor cells.
Pseudomonas One of the most common types of
persistent bacteria existing in natural
environment. They can cause
pseudomonas infections.
Myelocyte Cells in the process of differentiation,
before becoming white blood cells.
Natural Killer Cell (NK Cells) Patrols the entire body, attacking as soon
as they spot cancer cells/viruses.

Episode 7
The cell that lead NK cell to the house showed who he truly was, a cancer cell.
NK fought with the cancer cell but she cannot defeat it. Cancer cell talked about his past
about being mistreated, hence his hatred. Meanwhile, U-1146 and Killer T Cell saw a
room and then was surrounded by cancer cells. They then fought them but was
outnumbered. NK fell to the floor similar to where U-1146 and Killer T Cell was in which
the cancer cell NK fought went after her. The three of them fought him. Meanwhile,
AE3803 and her higher up, AA5100 saw that a lot of red blood cells carried a lot of food
or nutrients to the house where cancer cell and the immune cells were fighting. The 3
immune cells fought but could not defeat the cancer cell. The fight went berserk where it
went outside. AE3803 saw this and alerted the other immune cells, where they
surrounded the cancer cells. Due to an accident, B cell accidentally sprayed Killer T Cell
which makes NK cell laugh. The laugh revitalized her, allowing her to defeat cancer cell.
After a talk with U-1146, cancer cell passed away. U-1146 thanked AE3803 for her
alerting the other immune cells.
Important Terms Definition
Cancer Cell They proliferate wildly when there’s an
anomaly in the cells gene. They invade
boundaries between themselves and
surroundings. They release massive
amount of a substance called
inflammatory cytokine which draws
nutrient-rich blood.

Episode 8
AE3803 is tasked again for another task. This time, she is tasked to deliver in the
heart. The red blood cells were instructed what to do as they need to be careful when
delivering in the heart. AE3803 was determined that she can complete this task on her
own. U-1146 saw her and followed her to see if she can do it. He helped her in a
secretive way to cover up her mistakes like losing/dropping her notes. There were 2
bacteria who were about to attack her, but U-1146 managed to eliminate them before
attacking her. He was still secretive about it. Killer T Cell then confronted U-1146 about
AE3803. He punched him due to jealousy of his relationship to other cells as he saw B
cell with a bunch of other cells. U-1146 met up with AE3803 and made her talk about
her experience about working all alone.
Important Terms Definition

to the veins to the arteries. This is
repeated approximately 100,000 times a
day.
Inferior Vena Cava Largest vein in the human body. It
collects blood from the lower body,
delivering it to the right atrium.

and oxygen is received in its place.
Aorta From the aorta, the path splits into 2
smaller arteries, traveling to all capillaries
in the body
Capillaries Distributes oxygen and nutrients to cells
and retrieve wastes, such as carbon
dioxide.

Episode 9
This episode talks about the relationship of Helper T Cell and Killer T Cell. This
started off as Killer T Cell trains the Naïve T Cells. They then crashed a window to
where Helper T Cell was in which he argues with Killer T Cell due to his barbaric
behaviors. The Naïve T Cells, confused as they are, asked the Dendritic Cell about their
relationship where he pulled out a book of pictures of the 2. He then told them about the
story of when both of them were in the Thymus. He showed how Helper T Cell was the
best in his class while Killer T Cell was one of the lowest in the class. They went
through tests together where they were also roommates. One night, Helper T Cell
sneaked out to trains where he saw Killer T Cell also training. During the final exam,
Helper T Cell passed it without any problem where he gave Killer T Cell advice to how
to fight properly. Killer T Cell was close to failing, but passed due to Helper T Cell
shouting his “signature move.” Then they talked about their future. Back to the present,
Helper T Cell and Killer T Cell was embarrassed that dendritic cell shared their story.
Important Terms Definition

Nurture Lymphatic Cells, guiding T cell
organization.

Episode 10
This episode started off with AE3803 just doing her job. She was doing fine until
a bacteria followed her and cornered her. Luckily, a monocyte managed to save her just
in time. U-1146 arrived later but the bacteria was already eliminated. She then asked
him what a monocyte his. They separated ways again and AE3803 continued doing her
job where she saw monocyte in a hot spring. Later then, an explosion appeared. The
Staphylococcus Aureus strikes again bringing in more staphylococcus aurues to
avenger the previous one. The white blood cells responded but was unable due to the
bacteria fusing together. It was hopeless until Monocytes appeared and revealed their
identity, Macrophages which shocked AE3803. The monocytes/macrophages
eliminated the bacteria easily.
Important Terms Definition
Monocyte Are mononuclear. Migratory cells that
comprises 7% of all white blood cells.
Like other immune cells, they take part in
biological defense.
Coagulase An enzyme that brings about the
coagulation of blood by precipitating
fibrin.
Nasal Cavity An organ located at the entrance to the
respiratory system. It prevents damage to
the delicate pulmonary alveoli walls.

Episode 11
The episode starts in a hot weather, representing a drought. This is a
representation of the rising of temperature. The cells have felt the heat where it is seen
how hot it is through sweats and the lack of back-up fluids. All cells gathered at a central
area where they would be transported. In the pathway, the body feels vertigo which
disrupts their walk properly as it disrupts the lights. And then dizziness where they fell to
a hole. And then fainting where the lights went out and they experienced black out. And
then heat stroke where there was no internal fluid left. A bacteria, Bacillus Cereus then
invaded and planned to attack them. While U-1146 attacked them, ha cannot fight
properly due to the heat, even with backup. The Cells responsible for the internal heat
prayed for water/rain to come. On the other hand, U-1146 fought the bacteria which is
went outside. After failing, U-1146 fell off the cliff. Bacillus Cereus thought he won, but
then came a tube which poured out water to the cell, causing the temperature to bring
back down again. Bacillus Cereus then was eliminated by U-1146 which has energy
again due to the water.
Important Terms Definition
Thermolysis Dissipating heat by sending large
amounts of blood to the skin. One of the
body’s ways to regulate body
temperature.
Phagocytosis When phagocytes such as monocytes,
macrophages, and neutrophils absorb
bacteria and other foreign substances to
break them down.
Sweat Glands Sweat-secreting glands present in the
skin.
Bacillus Cereus A type of soil bacteria. Triggers 2 types of
food poisoning, diarrhea or vomiting.
Creates strong shells known as “spores”
during its development phase. It can
withstand 100 degrees heat for 30
minutes.

Episode 12
This episode starts as normal. AE3803 is just doing her job, delivering oxygen in
the heart until she came across AA5100. She was then introduced to a brand new Red
Blood Cell, which was assigned to AE3803 to guide. As AE3803 doubts herself,
AA5100 told her that she can do it. AE3803 then shares information to the new red
blood cell in which she says that she already knows these information. AE3803 gets
embarrassed and then continues to teach her. She showed her all around the heart,
and the other organs whilst telling her all about their jobs as red blood cells. They met
with different people in different places. AE3803 and the new red blood cell then meets
up with U-1146 and then separates due to her new assignment. Later, they were
appreciating the peace of the cell until a giant explosion occurs. Flustered, all cells
gathered at a center where the “government” issued an emergency alert. The immune
cells then worked to eliminate the invading bacteria.
Episode 13
After the explosion, white U-1146 rushed and saw no cell. Later, he saw one
which told him that millions of cells were sucked in to the hole of the mouth. AE3803
and her new kouhai worked hard to deliver oxygen to the cells to avoid them dying.
They worked so hard, going back to back to deliver the oxygen to save the cells. The
new red blood cell was obviously confused with the situation on why AE3803 was
continuing her job despite the situation. They came across a cliff that was guided by the
platelets in which due to the rising blood pressure, a lot of red blood cells fell. There was
also a temperature drop. In a snowy area, AE3803 and her kouhai were struggling
where her kouhai gave up and questioned why she kept going. AE3803 explained that
she is just doing her job and continued to deliver, until she collapsed. Later, a group of
foreign red blood cells came to an aid by helping provide oxygen to the cells. Though
confused on where they came from, they appreciated the help. The foreign red blood
cells explained that they were sucked by a tube and was then transported. The lives of
the cells went back to normal after that.
Important Terms Definition
Hemorrhage Shock Occurs when the body loses massive
amount of blood due to external injuries
or internal bleeding. It is when the body
can no longer maintain blood pressure.
Blood Donation To provide blood free of charge for
transfusions and blood product
manufacture.
Transfusion A type of treatment in which missing
blood components are replenished.

Reflection
The anime is a really fun and interesting take on the cells within our body. The
analogies that the mangaka (creator) used is interesting as you would not expect such
analogies, just like the analogy of Steroids being robots, which is not what you would
expect, but fits well. The characters are interesting as they each have their own
personalities that makes the show engaging other than just being educational..
According to various YouTube contents on doctors reacting to this series, in which they
all say that it is accurate, I agree with it. Based on my basic knowledge, I can see how
accurate the jobs and the analogies of the cells and parts are. This show provides an
overview of the importance of the cells and their functions while not going too deep with
it, which is fun to watch to those who have prior knowledge on this topic, even just a
little. Just like my prior knowledge of the purpose of white blood cells, I can see the
association of white blood cells being the “police” of the cells whilst having a hierarchy
on their appearance and skills as they each have different specialized targets which
depends on their strengths. Overall, it was a really fun show to watch. These types of
shown, in the style of educational while entertaining, is always a hit or miss as they tend
to focus on one aspect while disregarding the other, like focusing more on
entertainment and giving inaccurate information or vice versa, but this anime has hit
both. Not only does it give factual information, it is a fun show that gives subtle comedic
aspects in the perfect times in order to not lean heavily into a dramatic show. As an
entertaining and educational show, this is one of the great shows that does this.
