PBIS in Ruskin Elementary School

PBIS stands for “Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports” which is the process for creating

a safe environment to make sure students are achieving academic and social goals. Ruskin County

Elementary School involves PBIS to help staff, parents, and students to make sure they are ready,

respectful, responsible, and have a positive school culture. In the Ruskin County Elementary School, they

have various methods of inputting PBIS into their students such as “Ready Behavior” which contains

“hands to yourself,” and "play carefully.” Another method is “Responsible Choices” which has “do your

best,” and “cooperate and share,” the last methods used in the school is “Respectful Actions” which has

“listening to directions” and “Go directly to destination.” The website also includes ways to be able to

involve PBIS at home and how parents are involved with PBIS in the schools. In my opinion PBIS is

successful in every school and grade type because it motivates students to be responsible and respectful

with everyone around them no matter the grade level. As students begin to get older the PBIS of the

schools change to be able to modify how students act. Therefore, students still have the motivation to

be successful and know how to properly behavior in the classroom. As all the schools are required to

have PBIS in the schools there are disadvantages about the approach such as rewarding kids for good

behavior might not be enough over time because it will make them focus on the reward, not on the

behavior. However, PBIS helps the school show lower behavior issues throughout the school year.
