Splat Flat Cat

GENERAL PREPARATION
Glue the pattern pages onto card or thick paper and cut out the pattern pieces to make your
templates.
Lay out your fleece so the greatest stretch is sideways.
Cut a scrap of fleece 30cm wide and 27cm high ( 12” by 10½ inches) in colour 1 (face colour)

Cut a scrap of fleece 35cm wide and 23cm high ( 14” by 9 inches) in colour 2 (ear colour)
Trace the templates with a permanent marker onto the wrong side of the fleece.

*** Be careful not to press too hard or the ink may show through your material on the right side.

SEWING
* Always sew pieces with right sides together and use a 5mm/¼inch seam unless stated otherwise.

Sew the EAR PIECES together. Snip off the corner of the seam at the tip of each ear.
Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES from A – D.
Pin the ears in place on the FACE PIECE.
Pin and sew the FACE PIECE to the BACK HEAD PIECES matching points A and G (with the ears
sandwiched in between!)
Sew the BODY PIECES together from C – D.
Sew the BODY PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE, remember to leave the gap open for stuffing.
Sew the head to the body at the neck seam. I find the easiest way to do this, is to turn the head
right sides out and position it ‘inside the body cavity” (facing into the body!) Match points D and E
as you pin and sew.
Sew your kitty closed underneath ( from the nose to the belly button!) from F – G – E – H.
Turn the cat right sides out through the hole at the tail end of the body set aside while you prepare
the tail.
Sew the TAIL PIECES together and turn right sides out. Snip off the corner of the seam at the tip
of the tail then use a wooden chopstick or similar blunt pointed item to turn the tip of the tail nicely.
Looking at the markings of the pattern piece, sew the seam at the base of the tail. Then fold the
tail so that the seams are together. It will form a fold along the side of the tail.
Sew the tail to the BODY PIECES at point C, with the TOP seam touching the BODY PIECES.

ASSEMBLY
Stuff the kitty’s paws with toy stuffing, but only put a very little bit in the ‘arms’. Stuff the head very
well, then fill the body firmly with stuffing. (There is no stuffing in the tail.)
Turn in the seam underneath the tail and sew this closed with a ladder stitch.
Cut out the felt or fabric scrap pieces for your nose and snout using the templates provided.
Using the photo as a guide to position the snout and nose pieces on the face, and glue them in
place with non-toxic craft glue. Using the sewing guide, sew them in place and sew the eyes and
whiskers on the face. Use embroidery thread or upholstery thread to sew the toes – see the paw
sewing diagram for this.

Your Splat Flat Cat is ready for playtime!

Magic Fabric Balls

I call these balls ‘magic’ as it seems incredible that they only have one seam! It feels like magic
when you sew and sew and sew and end up at the beginning where you started! They are also
magic because you need so little fabric to make something such fun!

GENERAL PREPARATION
Glue the pattern pages onto card or thick paper and cut out the pattern pieces to make your
templates.
Lay out your fabric so the greatest stretch is sideways. Cut a scrap of fabric in colour 1 - (10cmx30cm/
4inchesx11½ inches). Cut a scrap of fabric in colour 2 - (10cmx30cm/ 4inchesx11½ inches)
Trace the templates with a permanent marker onto the wrong side of the fabric.

*** Be careful not to press too hard or the ink may show through your material on the right side.
***

SEWING
* Always sew pieces with right sides together and use a 5mm/¼inch seam unless stated otherwise.

The hardest part it the pinning – but follow these picture diagrams and it’ll be so simple!

A

Place the pieces at right angles to each other, matching point A on one piece with point B on the
other.
Pin point C on one piece to point D on the other.
Fold the other 2 sides up and pin them in place to form the ball.
Pin really well in between these first 4 pins.
Sew, the two pieces together, remember to leave a gap open for stuffing!

ASSEMBLY
(If you are making the bone from a non-stretch fabric you will need to ‘clip’ the seams all the way
around, so that the fabric will turn nicely.)Turn the ball and stuff it very firmly with synthetic toy
stuffing. Almost ‘over stuff it” so that you force it into a round shape. When the ball is nice and round,
sew the stuffing gap closed with a ladder stitch, using a strong thread like an upholstery thread.

Your Magic Fabric Ball is ready for play!

SEWING
* Always sew pieces with right sides together and use a 5mm/¼inch seam unless stated otherwise.
Pin and sew the BONE PIECES together, leaving the gap to stuff the bone.
Turn the bone right sides out.
(If you are making the bone from a non-stretch fabric you will need to ‘clip’ the seams all the way around, so
that the fabric will turn nicely.)

Fill the bone very firmly with synthetic toy stuffing.
