Sabi’y pinaglalaba’t pinagsisibak ng panggatong ng magulang. Tibo ka ba? tanong ko minsan. Ang
sagot ay kunwaring suntok sa dibdib ko.
Pero napakaganda niya para pakawalan. At napakabait. Siya’ng omoorder at nagdadala ng
pagkain sa mesa. Inaalalayan niya ‘ko sa pagtawid sa kalsada.
Nang ikasal kami’y kinarga niya ‘ko paakyat sa apartment, habang yakap ko ang saklay sa
paa. Pangatlong palapag kami. Kanya ang mabibigat na gawain: pagkabit ng TV antenna,
pagkumpuni ng kisame, pagpalit ng screen. Ako’y taga-luto lang.
Isang hatinggabi nagkasunog sa unang palapag. Abot sa ikaapat na palapag ang usok.
Sensitibo ako sa usok, agad akong nahilo. Nang balikan ng malay, nasa ospital na ‘ko. Nasunog ang
buong apartment. Kaunti kaming nakaligtas.
Sa bagong apartment, bago matulog, tinanong ko kung paano n’ya ‘ko nailigtas. Inilipad
kita palabas ng sunod na apartment, sagot n’ya.
