Exercise 1

We have demonstrated during the course session that the first 𝝀 and the second
𝝁 Lame coefficients are functions of the Young modulus 𝑬 and the Poisson’s
ratio 𝝈 as indicated by the two relations:
𝜎𝐸 𝐸
𝜆= 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜇 =
(1 + 𝜎)(1 − 2) 2(1 + 𝜎)

1- How can we define the system units of each term of the previous relation?
2- Determine the inverse function defining the Young modulus and the
Poisson’s ratio in terms of the two Lame coefficients
Exercise 2
This exercise aims to demonstrate the equality of the incidence and reflection
angles of a seismic wave when it encounters a horizontal layer separation
between two elastic medium. We request you to demonstrate this phenomenon
using Fermat's principles. As a reminder, according to these principles, the
seismic wave follows the path that minimizes travel time.

Exercise 3
Determine among these functions which one may be a wave function:
𝑢(𝑥, 𝑡) = 3𝑡 + cos(2𝑡 − 𝑥) , 𝑔(𝑥, 𝑡) = 𝑐𝑜 𝑠(2𝑡 − 𝑥) 𝑒 𝑗𝜔𝑡 ,
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑡) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠(2𝑡 − 𝑥)
