Introduction
Grammarly and QuillBot are two popular options for free grammar checking of any writing style. These programs are commonly used
by students or other individuals with efficient technological skills. This white paper presents the results of a cognitive walkthrough
usability test comparing the tools’ performances for a typical user.
Methodology
Test environment and equipment
This test was performed in my apartment on a Dell laptop using the latest version of windows and the chrome browser.
Tasks
1. Create an account.
2. Integrate into other writing platforms.
3. Upload a previously written document.
4. Paraphrase the document.
5. Use the generated tips to find and correct spelling and grammar mistakes.
6. Create a website citation.

8. Adjust the goals for the document.
9. Utilize the AI feature to expand the writing.
10. Download the document and open in a different writing application. (i.e. word, google docs, etc.)
Evaluating Criteria
Efficient: The task was accomplished quickly and with little effort.
Effective: The task was successfully completed.
Engaging: The application provided an enjoyable experience.
Error Tolerant: Errors were easily corrected.
Easy to learn: Features were easily accessible and useable.
For each metric a six-point Likert scale (Table 1) will be used to rate whether I strongly disagree, disagree, slightly disagree, slightly agree, agree,
or strongly agree. Each point on the scale corresponds to a numerical value for each task. The six-point scale has been chosen to remove the
midpoint and the potential for a neutral result.

Conclusion
According to the data Quillbot is the better option for a free grammar checker. Although, I learned throughout the
evaluation that either option works well depending on what the application is being used for and what features are
needed. More specifically if the premium version is purchased both applications have almost identical features just
slightly different designs and website layouts.
