I tried to find a theme or guiding

question. At first I had “how

French culture evolved over
time?” Then it evolved into “ how
French culture was influenced by
major events/artists” and the
final one is “how art was
influenced by French culture/
French major events” Then I
gathered important artists from
different time periods to really
see the impact culture had on
them. There are also a couple
marking events on fig.1. I
researched many artists that are
in one way or another related to
France. Some of them are french,
others lived a long time in France.
Then after brainstorming different
artists, I chose 8 of them. I might

need more because I am planning
on creating one artwork per artist
and since I chose HL, I could use
2 or 3 more. I chose to start with
the artist closer to ‘my time’ and
then go back in time. The first
one is David Hockney. His last
work was paintings of his house
and trees in Normandy on iPad.
So that is the first medium I
chose. We had a lot of issues
with the app ProCreate which is
the one I wanted to draw with. So
while I was waiting for it to get

projects and researched the

artists I wanted to be inspired by.

brainstorming, future compositions…
Hockney meant for
his artwork to soothe

people in these
difficult times during
COVID. Calming
anxiety was the main
purpose so he chose
to paint his
environment and the
trees around him. His
intentions inspired
me to choose a

up and is a part of
me. It represents
Fig. 3 happiness to me and
hopefully to others
too. I asked my
grandma in France
to take a picture of
this place on the
afternoon. It looks
better because the
sun is shedding a
warmer light on the
tree. As I wrote on
fig. 7, Hockney used

and I wanted to
reproduce his style
to better understand
it. I also decided to
use the same
medium as Hockney
which is the iPad.
The picture that I
chose has been
taken from a
different angle than
what I had previously
sketched on fig. 7
but I don’t really

just as interesting to
explore and paint.
Fig. 1 to 5 are the pictures my grandma sent me giving me multiple options in

terms of angle and composition. Fig.1 has a really interesting composition
because nothing big is right in the middle but there was too much details to
do something as simple as Hockney did. I liked he angle of fig.2 but the tree
looked weird. Fig.3 is too basic, the composition is not that original as is fig.
4. The winner was fig.5 because I like how the tree is slightly off to the left and

the leaves on the foreground which is actually on the top making the
composition more original.
David Hockney is 83 years old
and I was very surprised when
I read that he used iPad tools
regularly in his artworks,
especially recently. Figure 1, 2
and 3 were made on his iPad
when he was stuck in
Fig. 1 Normandy, France during the
quarantine because of the
epidemic. Back then, he felt
like the world needed his art to
soothe the anxiety triggered by
the virus. So he started
drawing nature around him.
Fig. 4 And I gotta say, his works do
relax me. We may think that he

Reflection
I am satisfied with the final product
even though I think that the leaves
should be fuller . Unfortunately I ran
out of time. The color palette was
respected and we can clearly sense
that this work was inspired by
Hockney. The overall emotion that this
piece emits feels like a chunk of
Eden’s Garden. Peaceful and joyful
with its bright colors, there is a
relaxing sentiment that makes it
gloom.
