What did I learn in my classes? (Something new)

- Phonology is the study of the sounds used in


the language which allow us to communicate
meaning.
- The phonemic chart is conformed by 20
sounds of vowels, 24 sounds of consonants
and 8 diphthongs.
- All words have stress just when have two or
more syllabus.

Which words MUST I remember? Write words and


definitions. At least 5 (per Unit).

- Phoneme: The smallest sound unit.


- Voiced sounds: To produce a voiced sound,
the voice is used. Movement or vibration can
be felt in the throat.
- Unvoiced sounds: No voice is used. No
movement or vibration can be felt in the
throat.
- Primary main stress: Some sentences and
longer words may have more than one part
stressed.
- Minimal pairs: Two words which are different
from each other by only one meaningful
sound.
- Word boundaries: Where one word ends and
the next one begins.

EXAMPLES:

- Phonemes: /ɜː/, /tʃ/, /θ/, /ə/.


- Voiced sounds: /b/, /d/, /g/.
- Unvoiced sounds: /p/, /t/, /k/.
- Contractions: don’t, haven’t, didn’t.
- Minimal pairs: Bit and beat.
