    The dorsal column medial lemniscal pathway transmits fine touch, discriminative touch, and vibration sensations through myelinated nerve fibers in the dorsal columns. It relays signals from receptors in the skin up to the thalamus and somatosensory cortex via three neurons. First order neurons transmit signals from peripheral receptors to the dorsal root ganglia. Second order neurons cross to the opposite side and ascend in the internal arcuate fibers and medial lemniscus. Third order neurons terminate in the ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus and project to the somatosensory cortex.
