Some people say that globalization is having negative effects on

cultural identities, while others say that it is enriching cultural

diversity. Discuss and give your own opinion.
VERSION 1
Nowadays, globalization has been a bone of contention. A number of people argue
that it is adversely affecting cultural distinctiveness, while others claim that
cultural diversity can be enriched thanks to it. From my perspective, I am in favor
of the latter opinion although the former one is reasonable to some extent.
On the one hand, globalization can have several cultural drawbacks. First of all, the
loss of traditional values is the major effect. It is a fact that cultural exchange is
becoming more and more common, leading to the introduction of foreign
blockbuster series and art styles into many countries, namely Vietnam. As a result
of modern and costly advertising campaigns, a considerable number of Vietnamese
people have a special interest in foreign values and some Vietnamese traditional art
forms and festivals such as Cheo, Xam, Vu Lan are being forgotten. Another
disadvantage is the lack of cultural innovation. Due to advanced technology
imported from abroad, indigenous people have relied too much on foreign science
and technology. As a consequence, people can be afraid of developing their own
ideas of promoting or innovating traditional values and just following the footsteps
of other countries.
On the other hand, globalization can play an important role in diversifying culture.
The increasing interaction between cultures is the principal reason. In the past,
owing to distance and linguistic obstacles, contact with another culture is really
difficult. However, globalization has facilitated the advancement of technology,
breaking linguistic and distance barriers and allowing people from several cultures
to communicate and exchange information. An additional advantage of worldwide
integration in developing cultural diversity is that it can provide precious
opportunities to advertise culture around the world. People can take advantage of
tourism and mass media to promote the image of a country. Moreover,
governments can preserve distinctive features including cusine, costumes and
festivals to attract tourists, resulting in not only economic growth but also cultural
promotion.
In conclusion, although globalization can have negative impact on cultural
identities to a certain extent, I still believe that it can significantly contribute to the
enrichment of cultural diversity.
