Put pictures up on the board. As they list landmarks, have them
explain why the landmark is important. 1:22-1:35
13 min
Discuss the word landmark.
 What is a landmark? (an object in a city or town that can
be easily seen and recognized from a far ways away. A
place that people think of when they see the landmark)
 What are some landmarks in the world? (Eiffel tower,
Empire State building, Great Wall of China, Leaning
Tower of Pisa, The Colluseum, Golden Gate bridge).
 Do we have Landmarks in Southern Alberta? (The Saddle
Dome, Royal Tyrell Museaum, Giant TeePee in Medicine
Hat, Giant Dinosaur in Milk River).
 Do we have some in Lethbridge? (The Highlevel bridge,
Fort Whoopup, the Watertower, Nikka Yuko Japanese
Garden).
Why are Landmarks important?
 Usually have a historical meaning and purpose, has
cultural importance, was part of the creation of the city,
helps the economy of the city, brings in lots of tourists).

Talk about Fort Whoop-up:

 We talked about the High Level bridge before this class,
and today we are going to talk about a different
Lethbridge landmark.
 Fort Whoop up is important to Lethbridge because it is the
main meeting ground from the fur trade here back in the
1800’s!
 This was way back when settlers first came to Alberta. It
is located on traditional Blackfoot Territory.
 Back then, Lethbridge didn’t really exist yet- but fur
traders and the Blackfoot people would use the fort to
trade items with each other instead of using money.
 Fort Whoop-up is an important part of Lethbridge because
it is what really started lethbridge as a city.
 You can go down into the river bottom and visit fort
whoop-up anytime! They have special days when they do
crafts like candle dipping, or making bannock on the open
fire pit.
1:35-1:55
Tell students that a lot of times, landmarks aren’t built to be a
20 min
landmark- they often just end up being important.
 BUT today, we are going draw a picture of a landmark we
have seen, and then draw one that would be your personal
landmark if you could make one!
 Have students go back to their desks and take out their
pencil crayons While I hand out the worksheet.
 If they are having a hard time coming up with a landmark,
tell them to ask their group for some ideas!
 If they don’t finish their picture today, we can finish it
tomorrowwhenever they have extra time. 1:55-2:00
5 min
Clean up- Have students put away their supplies and come sit in
the reading corner. Ask them if there is anything really special
about their landmark that they would like to share.
 Is there something they are going to add? 2:00-2:05
Have students take a couple minutes to go to the bathroom, wash
their hands, and come back to line up for gym class.
