What do Teachers Think About the Iowa Core?
Teacher one: Zachary Hackbarth
The Iowa standards have not changed since he has been in college, so it has not been an adjustment. He
believes that, to a degree, it has been helpful. He also feels that it depends on the school that you are
teaching in. In larger schools, where there are multiple teachers teaching with Iowa Core there becomes a
lack of flexibility. They have several nit-picking meetings between teachers to ensure consistency.

Teacher two: Heather Schurr

In her very first year of teaching, they did not have it yet; it was school by school. She finds it helpful
because it creates consistency throughout the state. For social studies, it was hard at first because it was
measured in understanding. This was revamped four or five years ago. She did not like it as much to start
out with, but after the fixing, she started to like it.
