html Analysis of Thriller Sequence 1 Psychological Thriller: Shutter Island: Leonardo DiCaprio

Mise-En-Scene
Location/Setting: On a ship at sea, midday clouds and dullness indicates that it is midday. The dull and darkness of background sound shows the setting. Characters are investigating, are wearing suits, and are working class, white background and part of the search /forensic force, FBI. Props/Iconography: Water (ship is moving as is seen). Moving ship, moving water indicates this, showing the setting, at the sea. Costume and Makeup: Both men have suits and ties on. Makeup is added to make them look pale and ill and under stress. Suit is ragged, showing hard working gentlemen, have worn for a long time, may not get paid enough to buy new ones so these are repeatedly worn and have been worn out. Also shows that they do not look after themselves properly. Lighting: Mood of lighting: scary, intense, suspenseful, dull lighting. Lighting gets lighter and darker as mood and atmosphere changes, different mood of setting. Use of Colour: Gray/ Dull/ White/ Dull Blue/ Black. Characters positioning: Leo: Near the camera, looks taller than other character. Leo looks older and wiser. They are getting to know each other, constant shot reverse shot as they speak. They both seem dreary. Thoughts and feelings: Something is terribly wrong/ or will go wrong, anticipated feeling. That something bad that may happen/ has happened needs to be taken care of, investigated at.

Cinematography:
Angles: LOW ANGLE: At start *ship* Looks bigger than it actually is, because of the positioning of the camera. It is low. CANTED ANGLE: When Leo looks in the mirror at himself he looks ill/ drugged up/ worried etc. The shot makes him look insane. BIRDS EYE VIEW: Camera looks down to the sink from the mirror (whilst looking at Leo). Supposedly the mirror shows the birds eye view of him washing his face. Movement DOLLY AND CRANE: Leo is not running but walking on the ship deck towards his new partner. ZOOM: When he leaves the bathroom to go out to his new partner. Shots: ESTABLISHING SHOT: At the start when the subtitle of the film fades away, the Ship is shown. LONG SHOT: Of the ship at start of the movie. You can see its front and side body and the flowing water surrounding the ship. OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT: When Leo is washing his face and says to himself whilst looking in the mirror pull yourself together. The shot is directly over his shoulder. MID SHOT: Leo has just finished looking at the mirror after washing his face (OSS) He straightens his back and we see his top half of the body. CLOSE UP: We can see Leos entire face when he is talking to himself in the mirror. Also when he is looking out of the Ship window, we can see the detail on his face, facial hair, skin, colour of the collar of his shirt. CLOSE UP: From the POV/BEV perspective, we can see his entire face, after he raises his face after those shots. His face is zoomed into. CUT IN: The shot shows Leos hands whilst he is washing them in the sink CLOSE UP: Instantly showing his face again with the detail. LONG SHOT: When Leos left the inside of the ship to go towards the deck, he sees his friend. Shot is of the friend from Leos perspective, camera is placed behind Leos back.

MEDIUM CLOSE UP SHOT: Of Leo standing outside the door to go inside. Looking at the person standing on the deck, waist upwards is where the camera is placed. POV: When Leo is looking at other agent. TWO SHOT: The two agents interacting with each other on the deck, standing side by side, exchanging words. Holding barrier of the ship, standing on the edge of it.

Sound
Diegetic: Ships sound, movement of water and ship movement. Objects moving on the ship as the ship moves, items that have lost balanced or those that are hollow, easily moved. Background noise of ship and water heard by characters. Objects banging into each other as they move. Wind, howling. Footsteps heard by characters, each others footsteps. Characters groaning noises. Dialogue When they both are speaking to each other.

Non-Diegetic: Background music, suspenseful and intense music. Dark and dreary score music. Sound Music Slow, quiet music in background, very faintly heard.
