LIVE CASE ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

Q1) The Recykal Marketplace connects the buyers (recyclers) with the sellers (informal sector
kabadiwals, aggregators, etc) on its B2B marketplace. The first 2-3 years were deployed in
building trust with the informal sector who perceived Recykal as a forced entrant in the space.
How should Recykal look at evolving its relationships with the informal sector participants in the
years to come?

Q2) The government plays a critical role in enabling policy for waste collection and waste
channelization in India. Recykal has been navigating the space to work in an environment
wherein the government isn’t transacting with Recykal, rather enabling the company’s work
through policy. How should Recykal look at the role of government. Should Recykal consider
potential commercial relationships with the government.

Q3) Recykal works with 200+ corporates (Coca Cola, Unilever, LG, Samsung etc) as a
sustainability partner, however, a large chunk of the work/existing business is really compliance
enabled services that center on the circular economy (fulfillment of plastics waste channelization
targets etc under the Extended Producer Responsibility regulations etc). Recykal’s learnings so
far have been the following - CEOs and CSOs talk of lofty sustainability goals however, the CFO
wants compliance at minimum cost? How does Recykal address this conundrum?

Q4) Themes such as child labor continue to exist in India’s waste management ecosystem. While
regulation, enhanced need for traceability etc reduce its risks, the pace is slow. How should
Recykal address the needs of building transparent and sustainable SOPs for the waste
management formal sector wherein the challenges of India’s jugaad marry the sustainability goals
/ ethical sourcing goals of large corporations such as Ikea etc.
