IV VZ7000 Converter
Chapter 1
Outline

The VZ7000 converter is an equipment that does not need the precharge resistance
by using a thyristor to the rectifier and charging DC bus by controlling a phase.
In addition, this equipment converts three phase AC power, which can break AC
line input when an error is occurred, to DC power. Also, from safety point of view, the
VZ7000 converter equips with a AC line fuse. However, please be noted that the re-
sistance regeneration kit is required to radiate regenerative energy. Read carefully
and understand of the instruction manual for proper operation of the converter.

2.7.3 Timing Flow Chart for Input and Output Signals

Sequence signals are processed in the converter under the following timing as
shown in the Fig 2-8.
Processing of sequence signals:
1. When power supply for the control circuit is turned on, the POWER LED is light-
ed.
2. The 7-segmented Code LED display with a decimal point flashes when the processor is
properly running.
3. of the processor is complete, and the converter is properly running,
the fault relay (FR) contact gets closed, and the regulator gets ready for operation.
4. When a RUN enable signal is entered, the DC BUS of the main power is charged
(status light blinks in green). When the charge is complete, RDY turns on
(status light turns green).
5. When the protection circuit detects an error, the gate signal of the thyristor gets immediately
disabled, and the error contact output FR opens.
6. The fault condition continues until a reset signal is input, or the unit is turned off and then
back on again. A reset signal can be received as long as RUN input signal is disabled.
7. The RB signal turns on when the DC BUS voltage reaches a level that enables regeneration.
Also, active RB signal enables a DC BUS capacitor to be discharged while the unit is off.

Installation and Wiring

CAUTION: Only qualified electrical personnel familiar with the construc-

tion and operation of this equipment and the hazards involved should
! install, adjust, operate, or service this equipment. Read and understand
this instruction manual and all other applicable instruction manuals in their
entirety before proceeding. Failure to observe this precaution could result
in destruction of the equipment, severe bodily injury, or loss of life.

CAUTION: Regarding wiring, grounding, installation of circuit breakers,

and overcurrent prevention should be conform to related regulations. Oth-
! erwise, the converter might be damaged.

3.1 Recommended Installation Site

An installing plan for converter is necessary so that environmental conditions and

operating conditions of the converter are preferable. Prior to the installation of the
converter, read and understand the instruction manual in advance, and make effort
to prepare preferable conditions for the converter.
1) Keep the installing site away from oil mist, metallic powder, dust, other floating
particles, corrosive gas, and inflammable gas.
2) Prevent direct sun shine.
3) Keep away from heavy vibrations and noisy noises, and noise-sensitive instru-
ments are not adjacent to the converter.
4) Ambient temperature of the converter should be within a range of -10 to +50 de-
gree C. However, operating temperature of motors is preferably 0 to +40 degree
C. If operating temperature is beyond the range, recommend to degrade motor
power.
5) Humidity is 5-95% without condensation.
6) The maximum elevation is 1000 meter high. If the converter is installed on the
site beyond 1000 meter or above, the motor rating should be degraded 4% per
every 300 meters. If the elevation of the site exceeds 1500 meters, consult with
our local offices in advance.

Installation and Wiring 3-

3.2 Remarks for Installation

1. The converter should be properly mounted at both of perpendicular and

horizontal directions.
2. When installing a plurality of converter, the distance from ventilation inlets and
exhaust air outlets should be kept more than 100 mm so that generated heat in
the converter is not filled up.

3. Ambient temperature during operation of the converter is -10 to +55 degree C.

Keep a sufficient area for each ventilation hole and enough capacity for cooling
fans so as to prevent temperature rise in the cabinet. An approximate calorific
value at rated output of the converter common to 200V and 400V applications is
shown in the Table 3-1

3.3 Wiring of Converters

CAUTION: Only qualified electrical personnel familiar with the construc-

tion and operation of this equipment and the hazards involved should
! install, adjust, operate, or service this equipment. Read and understand
this instruction manual and all other applicable instruction manuals in their
entirety before proceeding. Failure to observe this precaution could result
in destruction of the equipment, severe bodily injury, or loss of life.
CAUTION: Wiring, grounding, mounting of circuit breakers, and preven-
tion of overcurrent must be in conformity to related regulations. Failure to
! observe this precaution could result in destruction of the equipment, se-
vere bodily injury, or loss of life.
ATTENTION: When performing insulating test of the converter, please use a
high resistance range of the multimeter instead of the insulation tester which
! applies high voltage on circuits and may damage on the circuits of the con-
verter.

3.3.1 Check Input Power Supply

Confirm that the input power supply to the converter coincides with the voltage and
frequency printed on the name plate of the converter and the power capacity for
your plant site is sufficient to supply input current necessary for the converter.

CAUTION: If the power source does not satisfy input power necessary
for a line, improper voltage may be supplied to the converter, and various
! instantaneous protection circuits may take action.

CAUTION: Risk of electrical shock exists. Provide one ore more circuit
breaker(s) in the incoming power line enabling to discharge the DC bus
! capacitor before accessing into the converter. Further, in order to avoid
electrical shock, open the circuit breaker in front of AC Input power before
accessing into the converter.

If proper line input voltage (200V for the motor with a cooling fan) can not be obtained,
a transformer is installed between the power source of the plant site and the converter.

3.3.2 Grounding Wires

Appropriate conducting wires for the converter are connected with the grounding
terminals for the motor frame, the external control station if it is used, the input and
output power transformer if it is used, and the drive. Confirm that this conducting
wires are properly connected, and then, connect it with the grounding pole.

3.3.3 Wires on Power Supply

Refer to the Table 3-3 for wires for input and output power supply for more informa-
tion. Select sizes of wires suitable for applied voltage and current in consideration
of types of wires, wiring methods, and length of wires.

Installation and Wiring 3-

3.3.4 Wiring of Control and Signal Circuits

Wiring of control and signal circuits is preferably performed in the following proce-
dures.
1 Confirm that all wires should be separated from the power lines. Because in-
duced voltage caused by current of the power lines may be generated in the
wires of the control circuit.
2 Use a separate duct for wires of the signal circuit. A dedicated duct for wires of
the signal circuit is preferably recommended.
3 The wires of the signal circuit must not pass through a junction box or the termi-
nal box prepared for cables for controls.
4 If the wires for the control circuit are crossed with each other, they must be
crossed at right angles.
5 Cables for signals must not pass through in the vicinity of the device generating
externally a magnetic field.

3.4 Connection Diagram

The Fig 3-2A shows the connection diagram when using one unit of the VZ7000
converter and the Fig 3-2B shows the connection diagram when using four units of
the VZ7000 converter in parallel.
When using VZ7000 converters in parallel, the communication is performed among
converters and necessary information is shared. Therefore, the wiring of sequence
signal of the interlock etc. is connected with only the master device.

3.5 Remarks for Wiring

CAUTION: Only qualified electrical personnel familiar with the construction

and operation of this equipment and the hazards involved should install, ad-
! just, operate, or service this equipment. Read and understand this instruction
manual before proceeding. Failure to observe this precaution could result in
destruction of the equipment, severe bodily injury, or loss of life.
CAUTION: Regarding wiring, grounding, installation of circuit breakers, and
overcurrent prevention should be conform to related regulations.
! Otherwise, the converter might be damaged.
ATTENTION: When performing insulation test of the converter, use a high
resistance range of the multimeter instead of the Megger which applies high
voltage into the converter, and may cause damage on the converter.

The following remarks are preferable for wiring works:

1 Capacity of the system of power supply varies depending on the input imped-
ance. Instantaneous peak power is necessary at the time of overload, and there-
fore, the system with the least variable voltage should be prepared so as not to
lower the specified voltage on the terminal blocks P and N of the converter.
Further, as the reactor can restrain harmonics generated by the power supply,
installation of AC or DC reactor is highly recommended.
2 Any circuit breaker for wiring is not built in the converter. An appropriate molded
circuit breaker for wiring must be installed at the input power supply side. When
using the ground fault interrupter, the breaker with countermeasures for harmonics
current should be used. Further, magnetic contactors can be installed if necessary.
3 Output terminals P & N of the converter should coincide with input terminals P &
N of the converter. Otherwise, the converter may not operate properly.
4 Connect the grounding terminal PE of the converter with the grounding terminal
G (E) of the input power supply.
5 Wires for signals such as analog output and cables for communication must be
completely separated from power lines. These wires and power lines must not be in
the same conduit, and both must not be parallel each other.
6 Wires for signals should be as short as possible. If they are getting longer, isolate
these signals by using an isolation amplifier.
7 In order to prevent noises on magnetic contactors, relays, solenoid valves, and
magnetic brakes installed in the vicinity of the converter, the surge killer such as
the CR filter must be installed for the AC control circuit, and the inverse parallel
diodes must be installed for the DC control circuit.
8 After wiring, connected wires should be checked to confirm that they are prop-
erly connected.

3.6 Applicable Wires

1 Applicable wire sizes of power lines and fastening screws for terminals are listed in
the Tables 3-3. Select appropriate wires and screws in consideration of temperature
rise caused by types of wires, wiring methods, and various wiring lengths.
The Table 3-4 shows fastening torques of terminal block for each model. Fix a wire
to terminal block based on the fastening torque shown in the Table 3-4.
2 Use the twisted pair wire with 0.2 to 0.5 mm2 for the signal wires such as analog
output or sequence signal connected with the I/O connector for control signal.

Notes:
1. Be sure to use copper wires only of which temperature rating is 75 degree C for the power line (R/L1,
S/L2, T/L3, PE, P1, P2, P, N) wiring.

2. Use proper size pressure terminals for wires to be used, and the UL listed and CSA certified pressure
terminals should be used. When put pressure on the pressure terminal to connect the pressure
terminal with the wire, use the genuine tool (JST Mfg: YPT-60N, YPT-150-1, BCT-860N, BCT-8150, YF-4,
E-4) specified by the terminal manufacturer.

Standard Mode and Parameter Mode
Setting of ADR switch and DAT switch are required for the VZ7000 converters, and also
changing of parameters are required if necessary.
Regarding the setting of ADR switch and DAT switch, refer to the Table 3-2.
This section describes the changing of parameters.

When supplying the control power of the VZ7000 converter, the regulator board starts based
on the standard mode.

4.1 Standard Mode

The standard mode is the mode to start the RUN of the converter. RUN of the converter can
be started from the RUN signal input. In addition, when an error is detected, the fault code is
displayed in CODE LED.

4.2 Parameter Mode

The parameter mode is the mode to confirm or change parameters.

Parameters are used for appropriate setting of peripheral devices of the converters.
The setting items are shown in the Table 4-1.

Exchange of standard mode and parameter mode can be executed by pushing the RST
button of the faceplate for three seconds or more.

Standard Mode and Parameter Mode 4-1

Switching between standard and parameter mode varies depending on the version of
Converters in use, and it is printed in the name label as Unit Rev.

Unit Rev.#0.4 or earlier:

Press and hold RST switch of the face plate for at least three seconds. In parameter mode,
STATUS LED starts flashing. You can switch the mode regardless of the ON/OFF status of #3
and #4 of the face plate S3.

Unit Rev.#0.5 or later:

Turn on #3 and #4 of the face plate S3, press and hold RST switch of the face plate for at least
three seconds. In parameter mode, STATUS LED starts flashing. If parameter mode is
changed to standard mode, turn off #3 and #4 of the face plate S3.

The following shows the steps of parameters change.

1) Set up register bank from the #3, #4 of the S3. Set up register address from the ADR
switch. In order to return the setting to the original after changing parameters, take a
memo of the switch setting before changing parameters.
2) Set up register data from the DAT switch. A decimal point of the CODE LED illuminates
when a carry is recognized to the register data being set up from the DAT switch. (From
Unit Rev.#0.3, a carry is executed by turning on the S3-1.)
3) The data set by the DAT switch is registered to the parameter data by pushing the RST
switch and the value is displayed to the CODE LED.
4) When parameters setup is complete, get the switch that was changed in parameter
mode back to the original settings. Turn on #3 and #4 of S3 of the faceplate then
reverse the mode from parameter to standard by pressing and holding the RST switch
for at least three seconds until the STATUS LED goes off. If the RST switch is held less
than three seconds, unintended setting changes may occur. Further, you cannot return
to standard mode from parameter mode with the switch settings changed.
(In Unit Rev.#0.4 or earlier, you can bring it back to standard mode without returning to
the original switch settings. Switch settings get only enabled during the power-on
process. Make sure that you have restored the switch back to its original settings.
setting is executed. Therefore, if the switch setting is not returned, reading of incorrect
switch setting is executed when power is supplied.)

In parallel connection, set up the same parameters of register bank "0" among the converters as
follows: [ 0: Precharge Time ], [ 1: Regenerative Voltage Adjustment] ,
[ 2: OL Setting ], [ 9: Discharge ] and [ 10: Fuse Blow Detection ]
Reset the power supply when you have changed the settings.

4.3 Auxiliary Function for Error Detection

VZ7000 converter has an auxiliary function that records and stores the information of the
errors (fault codes) that occurred during the standard mode.
The stored fault codes can be referred if you set ON to #3 of SW3 and OFF to #4 of SW3
respectively in parameter mode. Also, if a value within range of 0-9 is specified to the ADR
switch, the fault code can be displayed in code LED. The last 10 fault codes are put in order
from what happened most recently and going backwards.
0 displays the latest record and 9 the oldest.
Logs older than 10 records will automatically be deleted. If there have not been any events or
events occurred less than 10 times, error code will not be recorded, so the code LED remains
off.

If the fault code is not stored properly due to some kind of failure, "n" will be displayed in code
LED. Normally, it never appears in the event of a typical failure. Event information recorded in
a log is retained regardless of whether the control power supply is off.

Event logs can be cleared as follows:

1. Bring it into parameter mode, set SW3-3 to OFF and SW3-4 to ON, respectively.
2. Set ADR to 1.
3. Set DAT switch to 1
4. Press and hold RST switch.

Inspection for Troubles and Countermeasures
CAUTION: Only qualified electrical personnel familiar with the
construction and operation of this equipment and the hazards involved
! should install, adjust, operate, or service this equipment. Read and
understand this instruction manual and all other applicable instruction
manuals in their entirety before proceeding. Failure to observe this
precaution could result in destruction of the equipment, severe bodily
injury, or loss of life.
CAUTION: When touching on the converter, terminals of the motor,
and wires, power supply must be turned off, and verify that the DC bus
! capacitor discharges completely by directly measuring voltage between
P and N terminals of the converter with the Megger. Failure to observe this
precaution could result in severe bodily injury, or loss of life.
CAUTION: Burn hazard exists on the upper surface of the converter due
to the dangerous temperature.
!
5.1 Safety Precautions

1. Verify that the molded circuit breakers are properly turned on or off depending on
the type of inspection intended to be conducted.
2. We recommend to work together with an assistant to prepare for emergency
cases.

ATTENTION: When performing insulating test of the converter, Megger

! must not be used. Using the Megger may result in equipment damage.

3. The probe of the measuring instruments such as a multimeter should be handled

with a single hand.

5.2 Confirmation Prior to Inspection

1 Before power supply is turned off, verify conditions of display lamps listed in the
Tables 2-4 and 5-1.
2 Turn off power supply and wait at least five minutes until the DC bus lamp goes off
then verify that DC bus voltage drops down below 50V by using a multimeter.
If a capacitor "C. UNIT" is implemented, discharging can take longer than nomral

3 Verify the following safety items.
• Loose terminals and connections.
• Power supply voltage.
• Grounding for the converter and the motor frame.
• The surge suppressors are properly installed on coils of relays, solenoid
valves, and magnetic brakes which can generate noises in the vicinity of the
converter and motors.
4 Verify that protective functions are suitable. If not, readjust them and power up.

5.3 Fault Codes
When the abnormality is occurring or an alarm is issued on abnormality detection, the STATUS
LED and CODE LED behave as follows:
Abnormality: STATUS LED – Red, CODE LED – ON
Alarm : STATUS LED – Off, CODE LED - Blinking
When two or more events are occurring, fault codes are displayed in a sequential manner.
If an alarm is issued during an abnormal event, an alarm code will not be displayed.
In parameter mode, parameter settings indicated in the ADR switch are displayed in code LED
regardless the presence of events. The fault code is displayed when the status indicator is
blinking in orange.
Table 5-1 shows a list of codes and abnormal condition.

1. This is a range of regular input voltage in which the converter normally operates. If input voltage is lower
than specified voltage, reduction of the rated power is required.
2. Regarding the capacity 220kW or more, parallel drive can be constructed by connecting UAZ701A or
UAZ701E converter in parallel (parallel drive is available until Max. four units). The rated output current is
calculated as follows:-
Rated current = (number of parallel connection) x (rated current of UVZ701A or UVZ701E converter)
