DART® PLUS Drive-By Remote Monitoring Interrogation System for Test Points
Product Overview
The DART® PLUS RMI System is designed to provide accelerated, remote and hands free data
acquisition of values from Rectifiers and Cathodic Protection Test Points which are required by Federal
Law and enforced by the Department of Transportation, Office of Pipeline Safety as well as individual state
DOT Agencies.
The data acquisition is accomplished through the integration of three separate technologies. By combining
the Global Positioning System “GPS”, with the Personal Computer “Laptop” and the blending of
advanced radio technology with state-of-the-art microprocessors, it is now possible to monitor isolated
areas that were impossible to interrogate with conventional remote monitoring techniques by using the
DART® PLUS RMI System.
Through the integration of these three technologies all of the desired test points of any kind are
permanently located and mapped regardless of future events (i.e. being paved over by road construction
crews) and are automatically located and polled even though they are buried under concrete, soil,
encased in steel rectifier cabinets or placed in concrete and cast iron sub-surface vaults.
The operational procedure is simple and to the point. No longer is it required to have a “Trained and
Qualified Corrosion Technician” take these readings. All that is now required is a responsible person with
a drivers license and a basic understanding of what is required to do the job, which is, placing the DART®
PLUS Laptop Interrogator on the dash board of the car, truck, airplane, helicopter, or boat being used
and drive according to the directions of the GPS system while data is recorded as he or she drives. Up to
600 readings a day can be recorded depending on traffic conditions and at speeds from 5 mph to 100 plus
mph. At the end of the day the acquired data is down-loaded into any of a variety of programs or
databases, Lotus 123, Excel, Access, et cetera for the evaluation of the Corrosion Engineer and his or
her staff.

• Provides 12 readings each time the remote unit is polled. This includes the readings from the last twelve months.
This not only satisfies the federal and state requirements for monitoring CP test points but also completely satisfies
the requirements for verifying the operational status of the Cathodic Protection Rectifiers.

The DART® PLUS Remote Module Specifications
The DART® PLUS RMI System is constructed of military grade hardware and is assembled in an ISO-9000 facility utilizing the most stringent
and up-to-date Quality Assurance procedures.
Following are the specifications for both the DART® PLUS Remote Modules and the DART® PLUS Interrogator Units.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module is powered by a Replaceable long life C-Size Lithium-Thionyl chloride battery with an expected
life of 10 years dependent on frequency of use. Normal use is interrogation of module one to three times a year.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module can also be provided powered by normal AC power (110-220 v, 50-60 Hz) when available,
such as in rectifier, anode box or indoor applications.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module has a continuous operating temperature of -40ºc to +85ºc at 100% humidity meeting the military
grade specifications for all weather applications.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module electronics are encapsulated in navel grade epoxy which precludes moisture migration into the
electronics and any softening of the epoxy in saturated sea water conditions.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module is manufactured using military grade electronics and features an enclosure made of a high
impact and high content of carbon black which precludes degradation from ultra-violet exposure.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module has a unique serial number assigned to it and is registered in the GIS map by the GPS system
which will locate the module permanently. This assignment is established in the field at the time of installation. It is important to
note, that regardless of the number of DART® PLUS Remote Modules that are located in any concentrated area ( such as utility
corridors), your DART® PLUS Interrogator will only poll your installed modules and will have no effect on other modules in the
corridor even if they are touching each other.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module when interrogated by the RF link, with its assigned serial number, will send back the stored
readings and at the same time will provide the Lithium battery voltage and synchronize the time of the Remote Module with the GPS
time in the Laptop PC..
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module wireless communications system has an effective range of 30 to 325 feet (9m to 100m) for
modules installed below grade in valve boxes, buffalo boxes, regulator vaults, direct burial, et cetera.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module wireless communications system has an effective range of 3,000 plus feet (1,000 meters) for
modules installed above grade in test stations and interrogated from car, truck, boat, helicopter or airplane.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module wireless RF link uses for North America the unlicensed 902-928 MHz ISM band employing a
Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum communications technology.

• The DART® PLUS Remote Module wireless RF link uses for Europe the unlicensed 868-870 MHz band.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module wireless RF link uses for Asia the unlicensed 420-430 MHz band.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module has an internal clock with “Two Minute / Month Accuracy”, while pushed to full operating
temperature. This clock is reset every time the remote module is polled, by the use of a state-of-the-art ultra low power
Microprocessor and RF transceiver technology and the efficient use of software controlled low power standby modes of operation.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module has three analog monitoring channels. The standard range is + 7.0 volts for reference
electrodes readings with a 20 meg-Ohm internal impedance for reference electrodes readings, + 250 V for Rectifier voltage output,
+ 150 mV for Rectifier current output at the shunt and having a 60 Hz AC rejection capability and a transient voltage trapping
capacity of 2,500 volts. Other ranges are available on special order for special applications
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module has a 1 mV or less accuracy in all of the readings it takes, regardless of the voltage range
that is used.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module will provide sacrificial anode to structure current output, as well as, instant Off & On IR Free
readings in compliance with the DIN 50925 Stelth 7 standard using a 1 ampere, dual contact, zero power latching relay.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module’s 50 mA, dual contact, zero power latching relay feature provides the ability to apply the
System to a broad range of applications not limited to corrosion.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module will measure and store 12 readings from each channel, at an in the field programmable interval,
of from 1min to 30 days.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module has been designed to conveniently fit into the “Top Hat style” CP test station which is marketed
under the trade name Fink by Cott Manufacturing and Bullet Box® CP test station which is manufactured by BORIN
Manufacturing, Inc. This consideration makes retro-fitting the DART® PLUS Remote Module into existing test stations that the
utility has previously installed very easy.
• The DART® PLUS for Rectifiers Remote Module has the ability to read the output of any rectifier, voltage or current output.

The DART® PLUS Interrogator Package Specifications
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator Package consists of first, a Laptop PC with latest Windows Operating System and 2 USB ports.
This can be your currently owned laptop, or a laptop provided by the distributor for the specific use of the DART® PLUS system.
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator Package consists of second, a Global Positioning System – GPS receiver. This embodies a
high performance GPS receiver.
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator Package consists of third, a Radio Frequency Interrogation System – RFIS. Which uses the
same ultra low power Microprocessor and RF Transceiver technology as used in the DART® PLUS Remote Module and an
integral interrogation antenna. The “Custom DART Plus Software” allows the system to automatically poll remote modules when
the GPS software has determined that they are within range of the interrogator unit. The GPS visual indicators change from red to
green as they are polled.
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator Package consists of fourth, a system software that is” Microsoft Windows® latest version (minimum
Windows 2000) and Global Positioning System” which uses local area moving street maps along with the GPS locations of the
DART® PLUS Remote Modules. Part of this DART® PLUS Software package consists of manual interrogation software that is
used during installation to record the GPS location of the DART® PLUS Remote Modules and set the module’s reading
parameters.
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator Laptop PC Unit can be mounted on a vehicle mounting device to secure the Laptop in a fix
position while using it in the car, truck, boat, et cetera.

Summary
• The DART® PLUS Remote Modules can be installed conveniently in a broad range of locations.
Special adapters are available to mount the modules in sub surface vaults, on telephone or electric
poles, in rectifier cabinets, anode box enclosures, as well as, in open utility right-of-ways.
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator System is unconditionally warranted for a period of 3 years. The
only exclusions are acts of God, vandalism and theft.
• The DART® PLUS Interrogator System Software is provided to the user on a continuing basis at
No Charge. This DART® PLUS Software can be downloaded at any time (24 hours a day 7 days
a week 365 days a year) from BORIN Manufacturing’s web-site or it can be supplied by your local
Authorized Engineering Representative.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module can be supplied pre-installed in a Bullet® Box Cathodic
Protection Test Station ready to place in service.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Module can be supplied with any of the Stelth® Reference
Electrodes including the Stelth® 7 IR Free Probe.
• The DART® PLUS Remote Modules can be supplied with BORIN Manufacturing’s custom made
pipeline or cable marking system called Bullet® Markers. These markers consist of a Bullet ®
Box Test Station mounted on a 3 inch or 90mm cross-linked low density polyethylene conduit with
a 19” Lexan® marker head custom printed in one to four colors with a background color to either
match the industry standard or the corporate color theme.
