I. TOPIC:
a. Measurement as represented by comparing the size of objects and using a ruler to
estimate lengths using the unit standard.

II. OBJECTIVES/STANDARDS:
a. Following a group activity, a scavenger hunt, a teacher-led discussion, and an exploration
activity, TSWBAT identify inches on a ruler and measure 2 objects to the nearest inch
with 100% accuracy (measuring it correctly).
i. PA Core Standards for Mathematics CC.2.4.2.A.1 - Measure and estimate lengths
in standard units using appropriate tools.

III. TEACHING PROCEDURES:

a. Introduction (Anticipatory Set):
i. Ask the students if they have ever been measured at the doctor’s office.
ii. Ask the students who they think is the tallest in the class. Have the students line
up tallest to shortest.
b. Development 1 -
i. Have students measure objects around the classroom with unifix cubes
ii. Have post-it notes at each object for the students to write their answer as to how
many unifix cubes make up the object
c. Development 2 -
i. Introduce the concept of a ruler and inches
ii. Ask do we have unifix cubes with us all day? Do you get measured with Unifix
cubes?
iii. Ask what tool we can use to help us measure things. Look for the answer of a
ruler.
iv. Show a ruler, and explain that it is labeled in inches and centimeters. Today we
are going to be focused on inches.
d. Guided Practice 2 -
i. Ask for a number between 1-10. Use that many links and put it on the board.
ii. Measure the link with a ruler.
iii. Explain that you measure to the closest inch. Show an example of being closest
to one inch, and then move it so it is closer to the next inch.
e. Independent Practice 2 -
i. Pass out links and white boards to each group
1. Call out the number of links for students to connect and measure with the
ruler
a. Have students measure links with the ruler to the nearest inch
2. Have the groups make their own number of links and pass it to the group
behind them to measure.

f. Closure -
i. Ask students if they can use a ruler to measure the tallest person in the class.
ii. Try to measure the tallest person.
iii. Tell the students that they can use tools to make measuring easier.

IV. MATERIALS:
a. Computer
b. Smart board/Overhead projector
c. Pencils/Pens
d. Unifix cubes
e. Rulers
f. Links
g. Toys
h. Whiteboards
i. Dry Erase Markers/Erasers
j. Post-it Notes

V. ADAPTATIONS/PLAN MODIFICATIONS:
a. Slow my talking down so the students can keep up with directions
b. If I need more class time, have the students measure more objects. Have the students
measure objects to the nearest half inch.
c. If I need less class time, have the students measure less objects with the ruler (ex. Pick 2
of the objects they measured with the cubes)

VI. EVALUATION:
a. Formative - The sticky notes of the student’s measurements from measuring with unifix
cubes, the answers on the whiteboard from the group problems measuring the links in
inches
b. Summative - Creating their own link and giving it to a group to measure and check for
accuracy

VII. ONLINE CONNECTIONS

a. https://www.abcya.com/games/measuring
b. https://toytheater.com/ruler-inch/
VIII. REFLECTION:
a. Was the pacing adequate (trying to balance teaching the information of new terms and
reviewing information)? Did the students need more time to measure the objects?
b. Did we teach about half inches?
c. Did the students have an idea of what a ruler is? Inches?
