Executive Summary:

Introduction:
The Purple Bowl, a stable small business on Franklin, is facing closure due to
gentrification. We planned to create awareness of this issue within the Chapel Hill community to
make a change and preserve local businesses. We surveyed the local student population at
UNCunc, due to it being The Purple Bowl’s main demographic of customers. We pushed to draw
in more public awareness of the gentrification process happening on Franklin and also gather
community support for local small businesses like The Purple Bowl.
This report outlines the main gentrification issues The Purple Bowl faces, our team's
overall plan and objectives, and possible solutions to the problem. Furthermore, it includes our
research methods, research and survey results, and, finally, a conclusion that includes
recommendations on how to save the Purple Bowl.

Data analysis:

In our survey, we asked about experiences with The Purple Bowl, if people were aware of the
situation, and effects of the foreseen result of The Purple Bowl closing down.

With 35 responses, to their experiences Tthe majority of survey participantsresponses said they
had a positive experience with Tthe Ppurple Bbowl. Of the 35 responses, 73.5% voted good and
great. Reasoning behind this was mainly customer service, taste of the food, and kindness of the
workers, owners, and everyone affiliated.
74.4% of the responses hadve heard about the possibility of The Purple Bbowl closing down, and
25% were not aware of this possibility.

Effects of the seen result on the Chapel Hill Community:

have on the Chapel Hill community. With 41 responses total, 82% said it would have a negative
effect on the community.

Results trends, outliers, graphs:

We found that many of the respondentsresults were in favor of keeping Tthe Ppurple Bbowl and
felt that this new building plan would have a negative effect on the Chapel Hill Community. We
also found that many people who knew of the possibility of The Purple Bowl closing down didn't
know how to help.

Methodology:
To assist meeting our project objectives, we focused on the following questions:

● How has gentrification impacted The Purple Bowl and other local Chapel Hill
businesses?
● How does the community feel about the potential loss of The Purple Bowl?
● Does the community know how to they can voice their opinions to the town of Chapel
Hill regarding the closure of The Purple Bowl?

Data Collecting Methods:

When gathering data to understand community perspectives of the closure ofPurple Bowl Chapel
Hill, Purple Bowl Protectors gathered data in the following ways:

● Obtained stories from both The Purple Bowl and the community through local news sites.
Websites such as The Purple Bowl, The Daily Tarheel, and Town of Chapel Hill were
utilized to help understand the general background and perspective of the issue.
● Administered a survey to a more targeted demographic: students, faculty, and other UNC
affiliates through flyers posted around campus. These anonymous, online surveys were
obtained by Google Forms and gauged the perspective of The Purple Bowl’s closure.
● Conducted interviews with The Purple Bowl employees (and managers?). These personal
interviews were descriptive on how members viewed The Purple Bowl as well as how it
would affect them if it were to close down.

Data Analysis Methods:

After the data collection phase, members of the Purple Bowl Protectors analyzed all responses.
We ensured that all data had been recorded accurately and then separated the data into different
categories based on the question being asked. From here, we graphed different responses to give
a more visual representation of our data. Finally, our members reviewed the data and charts to
determine the implications of the data, what could be concluded, as well as recommendations
that could be made.

Conclusions:
This research shows that The Purple Bowl and the town of Chapel Hill are at risk of suffering the
consequences of gentrification. The Purple Bowl currently faces possible closure, and Franklin
Street itself risks losing its beloved small businesses in favor of larger companies. After
analyzing these findings, there are three recommendations we suggest to both save The Purple
Bowl and end the this process of gentrification in the community.

Recommendations:

Raising Public Awareness:

Raising public awareness of around both the gentrification happening in Chapel Hill and
the possible closure of The Purple Bowl will ensure that community members are informed
about these processes, allowing them to then take action to end these processes. From our survey,
we learned that many members of the UNC community are aware of The Purple Bowl’s possible
closure, but they may not be aware of the larger gentrification process that is happening in this
area. Furthermore, our survey results show that community members care deeply about Franklin
Street and The Purple Bowl. Because this community tends to believe these small, local
businesses remain open, educating the public on these issues will ensure that more people know
about this process, which will equip them to take actions to save these businesses. In order to
raise this public awareness, we recommend creating Instagram posts to a public account
providing information about these issues. Posting this information to social media will ensure
that many community members receive this information. T, and the platform allows community
members to easily share this information with others.

Raising Funds for The Purple Bowl:

In order to help The Purple Bowl combat closure, we recommend raising funds that can
be used to help the business relocate. In our background research, we learned that the closure of
The Purple Bowl is a part of a larger gentrification process happening in Chapel Hill that is
already underway. Because this process is in motion, it seems likely that The Purple Bowl may
need to relocate. While keeping The Purple Bowl at its current location is ideal, raising funds
will ensure the business will be able to relocate if needed, or, if not, stay financially afloat at
their current location. We recommend raising funds through a Go Fund Me page, which allows
community members to easily donate to this cause and share the donation page with others. In
order to ensure community members are aware of this fundraiser, we recommend including the
website link on the Instagram page and a QR code to the website on fliers, which that will also
be used to increase public awareness.

Voicing Opinions:
Our last recommendation is to motivate community members to share their opinions
concerning both The Purple Bowl’s closure and Chapel Hill gentrification withto tThe Town of
Chapel Hill. From our field research, we learned that many community members are unhappy
with both of these processes. However, these community members may not be voicing their
concerns to town leaders, and may not know how to do so. By voicing these opinions, the Town
of Chapel Hill will be more likely to alter their plans for the town. Our recommendation is to
increase awareness regarding how community members can voice these opinions through the
methods used to promote public awareness and raise funds by providing information about how
6

to contact town council members on an Instagram account and QR codes to this information on
fliers. One method we recommend is contacting the town council and Chapel Hill mayor. On the
Town of Chapel Hill website, there is a contact form under the mayor and council tab in which
community members can voice opinions. The page also includes a mayor and town council email
and phone numbers for the mayor and individual town council members.
