Executive Summary:
Introduction:
The Purple Bowl, a stable small business on Franklin, is facing closure due to
gentrification. We planned to create awareness of this issue within the Chapel Hill community to
make a change and preserve local businesses. We surveyed the local student population at
UNCunc, due to it being The Purple Bowl’s main demographic of customers. We pushed to draw
in more public awareness of the gentrification process happening on Franklin and also gather
community support for local small businesses like The Purple Bowl.
This report outlines the main gentrification issues The Purple Bowl faces, our team's
overall plan and objectives, and possible solutions to the problem. Furthermore, it includes our
research methods, research and survey results, and, finally, a conclusion that includes
recommendations on how to save the Purple Bowl.
Data analysis:
In our survey, we asked about experiences with The Purple Bowl, if people were aware of the
situation, and effects of the foreseen result of The Purple Bowl closing down.
With 35 responses, to their experiences Tthe majority of survey participantsresponses said they
had a positive experience with Tthe Ppurple Bbowl. Of the 35 responses, 73.5% voted good and
great. Reasoning behind this was mainly customer service, taste of the food, and kindness of the
workers, owners, and everyone affiliated.
74.4% of the responses hadve heard about the possibility of The Purple Bbowl closing down, and
25% were not aware of this possibility.
Methodology:
To assist meeting our project objectives, we focused on the following questions:
● How has gentrification impacted The Purple Bowl and other local Chapel Hill
businesses?
● How does the community feel about the potential loss of The Purple Bowl?
● Does the community know how to they can voice their opinions to the town of Chapel
Hill regarding the closure of The Purple Bowl?
● Obtained stories from both The Purple Bowl and the community through local news sites.
Websites such as The Purple Bowl, The Daily Tarheel, and Town of Chapel Hill were
utilized to help understand the general background and perspective of the issue.
● Administered a survey to a more targeted demographic: students, faculty, and other UNC
affiliates through flyers posted around campus. These anonymous, online surveys were
obtained by Google Forms and gauged the perspective of The Purple Bowl’s closure.
● Conducted interviews with The Purple Bowl employees (and managers?). These personal
interviews were descriptive on how members viewed The Purple Bowl as well as how it
would affect them if it were to close down.
Conclusions:
This research shows that The Purple Bowl and the town of Chapel Hill are at risk of suffering the
consequences of gentrification. The Purple Bowl currently faces possible closure, and Franklin
Street itself risks losing its beloved small businesses in favor of larger companies. After
analyzing these findings, there are three recommendations we suggest to both save The Purple
Bowl and end the this process of gentrification in the community.

Recommendations:
Voicing Opinions:
Our last recommendation is to motivate community members to share their opinions
concerning both The Purple Bowl’s closure and Chapel Hill gentrification withto tThe Town of
Chapel Hill. From our field research, we learned that many community members are unhappy
with both of these processes. However, these community members may not be voicing their
concerns to town leaders, and may not know how to do so. By voicing these opinions, the Town
of Chapel Hill will be more likely to alter their plans for the town. Our recommendation is to
increase awareness regarding how community members can voice these opinions through the
methods used to promote public awareness and raise funds by providing information about how

to contact town council members on an Instagram account and QR codes to this information on
fliers. One method we recommend is contacting the town council and Chapel Hill mayor. On the
Town of Chapel Hill website, there is a contact form under the mayor and council tab in which
community members can voice opinions. The page also includes a mayor and town council email
and phone numbers for the mayor and individual town council members.
