IDENTIFICATION OF THE SUBJECT
Shelly London tried to influence the development of ethical thinking among young
people by creating some initiatives, such as The Family Dinner Project, Computer
Game, and a Telenovela Programs that would promote ethical thinking and
discussion about ethics among the audience members. Would the ethics
initiatives work?
CRITERIA SELECTION
A successful initiative is able to improve ethical thinking of the target audiences,
and are fulfilling these three key components:

1. The ability to recognize ethical issues


2. The competency to deal with the issues
3. The courage to stand up to pressure that make unethical decisions. (Whether
from a peer, a boss or others)

DINNER PROJECT
1. The ability to recognize ethical issues:

The motivation of Family Dinner Project is based on a a body of research


pointing to significant benefits of the regular practice of families sharing meals
together, such as better school performance and self-esteem for children and
lower incidence of negative outcomes like substance abuse, depression, and
eating disorders.

2. The competency to deal with the issues:

The idea is that if families have great relationships and they can really talk,
then they can talk about things that matter. They can talk about what kind of
people they want to be and how they make everyday ethical decisions.

1. The ability to recognize ethical issues:

Video games offer the opportunity for complex plot lines and can be highly
interactive, with different outcomes possible for different decisions and come
out immediately.

2. The competency to deal with the issues:

Teenagers will play as village leaders resolving community’s problem thus will
be encounter and address complicated ethical dilemmas, and receive feedback
on the society’s well-being immediately.

3. The courage to stand up to pressure to make unethical decisions:

Teenagers will play as village leaders thus be in charge of the virtual


community. In our opinion, this position will force student to stand up and making
decision that will benefit the community as well as being ethical.

● Develop or influence a telenovela to include story themes that would promote


ethical thinking and discussion about ethics among the audience members.
● The work involves identifying media-worthy issues and experts, developing
media messages and “pitches,” writing op-eds, blogs and the like.
OVERALL EVALUATION
1. Computer games fulfill 3 key elements to improve ethical thinking of the
target audiences
2. Based on the informations and facts in the case, family dinner and other
initiative (telenovela) have not yet proven to fulfill the third key element
3. Several contingencies as a potential issues in the future
4. London’s target of influencing development of ethical thinking among young
people can be more effective if the contingencies are being mitigated
OVERALL EVALUATION
Despite the need of enhancement through solving the contingencies, we can conclude
London’s initiatives are by far working quite well because the audience get to learn more
about ethics as in:

- Families found The Family Dinner Project’s tools and tips useful and reported
improvements in their dinner practices
- Kids really found the game engaging and understood its purpose
Moreover, Shelly London's initiative has received appreciation from Harvard's professor in
The Family Dinner Project. A Professor at Tufts also proves that kids really found the game
engaging and understood its purpose.
IDENTIFICATION OF CONTINGENCIES
1. The Family Dinner Project: The scope is limited to audience with family. How
to broaden the scope?
2. Computer Games :
● Now, the project is being handled by professionals, is there any possibility that
in the future the game will be commercialized? If yes, how teenage audience
can afford?
● Where is the game will be launched? Does the platform attainable by big
audience, such as android?
IDENTIFICATION OF CONTINGENCIES
3. Other Initiative :
● Telenovela : in 2010s, Telenovela is a hugely popular soap opera genre around the world. But
right now, trends are shifting towards streaming platforms i.e. Netflix, is the production team
ready to shift?
● Other : in 2010s, London’s team develop media messages and “pitches,” writing op-eds, blogs
and the like. But right now, trends are shifting towards podcast, social media (Instagram or)
twitter, is the production team ready to shift?

4. Organization :
The organization structure is ambiguous, each project has an infrastructure unto itself. The
organization needs to be evaluate and restructured to reach London’s vision
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS
1. Consider how to mitigate future contingencies
2. Enhance current plans based on research and publications
3. Organizations: London had to create a 501c-3 organization that she could
lead. Some of the benefits are:
● A 501(c)(3) organization is a corporation, trust, unincorporated
association, or other type of organization exempt from federal income
tax, because London’s organization organized and operated exclusively
for literary and educational purposes.
● By establishing 501(c)(3) organization it is easier to get funds in terms of
charity and will be tax-deductable for donors
● Be legal and protected by the law
● Support professionalism in order to reach London’s goal
