HiSTORY TASK 1

Learning Goals
1. Be able to formulate questions related to different perspectives of the past.
2. Know how historians about the features of past based on evidence
3. Know about the features of particular periods and societies

RESEARCH ACTIVITY
1. HOOK & INQUIRY QUESTION> Display a map of the Maya civilization during classical and
modern-day map. (Show the PPT Slide). I will display the modern map and the ancient
Mayan map and lead them to think about how different the map or the demarcation
lines are. I will leave them to discover the location and its relevance to the equator.

Ask the students:


a. What do you think about the climate and geography of these areas? (What are
the challenges they might face in a hot and humid climate & dense vegetation.
b. Can we find evidence to help us understand the people's lives in this period?
What are they?
c. Ask students to consider the type of sources- primary or secondary.

2. ACTIVITY 1- Formulating Questions to learn more about the mayan life in a particular
period.

I DO: Students will be learning about the Maya civilization using the ruined cities of
Mayans. To guide students I will show an example of an artifact. I will lead them to think
of different questions so we can understand what life was like during that period.

PRINCIPAL BIRD DIETY


This is art and carving type of artifact.
Diety figure during 3rd-6th century.
It has a body of a human and a bird head.
It tells me that during that time, people were religious.
They believe in something supernatural.

3. WE DO: As a class, formulate questions that they can answer through the study of a city
and ancient buildings to help them learn about the civilization

Sample Questions:
1. When was the site built?
2. What was the site used for in the past?
3. What was the purpose of these buildings?
4. Why did the building survive?

4. I DO. Groups will research a city using the research template provided.

RESEARCHING ACTIVITY.- Students will consolidate their research through a creative


presentation.

TASK. Group choose a method of recording


a. A map/plan of the ruins with labels and facts to highlight places of interest.
b. A sight-seeing tour which guides someone around the site.
c. Interactivice media display.

ASSESSMENT: How would I know the students have achieved the goals?

1. Be able to formulate questions related to different perspectives of the past.

Students will talk about, share and write down their archeological questions in their
notebooks. The type of questions they come with will help me know how the level of
understanding.

2. Know how historians build inferences about the past based on evidence
Students will look at the archaeological structures and ask types of questions that will
help them understand the society during that period.
3. Know about the features of particular periods and societies
Students will cite or write, or articulate the features of the assigned research ancient
mayan city through their recordings or presentation. (For example, the temples in the

Mayan have lots of stairs. The temples were used a part of their religious ceremony
where priest who go up the the highest point of the temple etc. )

By asking the questions, I hope to see students start to take notice of the artifact's
details, functions, and how they were used in their society.
