SAP S/4HANA Overview
Introduction - SAP S/4HANA is a new product line
SAP S/4HANA is a new product and NOT a new version of SAP ECC. It is designed to be the Next
Generation, Intelligent ERP for a digital world. It features capabilities which do not exist in SAP ECC, such
as Machine Learning, Enterprise Search, Embedded Analytics…
▪ SAP S/4HANA stands for SAP Suite For (/4) SAP HANA, because it was designed to run on SAP
HANA
▪ It is not possible to upgrade SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA, BUT SAP ECC can be CONVERTED to SAP
S/4HANA.
▪ SAP S/4HANA requires different licenses from SAP ECC.
▪ SAP S/4HANA currently has a different maintenance strategy (5 years for SAP S/4HANA 2020) than
SAP ECC (mainstream maintenance and extended maintenance depending on EHP level).
▪ SAP S/4HANA 2020 follows a YYYY naming convention, this will continue in future releases. Previous
naming convention was YYMM e.g. 1909 (September 2019)

Often, simplification is associated with simplification of the data

model. Simplification has influence in multiple aspects, which will
