Theme

The theme of Genesis is the beginning of the world, of humanity, of family, of society, of

nations, of the Jewish nation, of sin, and of salvation. It answers a great question: Where did we

come from? Through a great narrative, it teaches us about God and about human nature so that

we understand the world around us in a better way.

Purpose
For educational purposes the writer wrote the book for a Hebrew audience. So, they

learn the links between generations from Adam till Jacoub and his 12 sons (and them). And a

reminder of the promise that was fulfilled with them.

Summary

The book of Genesis is the first book in the Bible and talks about the origin of the world.

The story of Adam and Eve talks about how humans were created and how sin destroyed the

relationship between them and God, that led them to be kicked outside Eden. Moreover, sin was

also the main reason for the destruction of the world through the flood, yet God provided

salvation through Noah’s ark, and through his descendants, we learn about the origin of nations.

The book continues to show us more zoomed-in scope into the beginning of the Jewish

nation with Abram. The story of Adam not only teaches us the origin of the Jewish nation; it also

provides great lessons on who God is. We learn from Abram’s mistakes while trying to take

matters into his own hands by consuming Ishmael, for example. Moreover, we learn that God is

sovereign over his creation and faithful to his promises since Isaac was born. We see Abraham's

1
faith in action several times, especially under the test. However, after Sarah’s death, Isaac was

ready for marriage; hence, he meets Rebekah. After Abrahm's death, Isaac inherits everything

from his father, and God blesses Isaac with twins Esau and Jacob. After an agreement, Esau sells

his birthright to Jacob in addition Jacob under the influence of his mom deceitfully took the

blessing of his father from Esau which led to conflict.1

1
I will end this here since it is not required, and it takes a lot of work.
2
Should it be 11:32? Argument of Abrams father could be part of the first Section of Genesis. For design
purposes Terah’s offspring can be part of the patriarch’s era although he isn’t considered as a patriarch, Abram is the
first one.
