UNIT 19

01-P-G-ZERO1STCOND
01.- ZERO AND FIRST CONDITIONAL. GENERAL RULES.

We use the zero conditional to talk about general facts, when the result will always happen.
We make a zero conditional sentence with two present simple verbs:

IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE, SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE

Ex: If babies are hungry, they cry.
We use the first conditional to talk about possible things that will happen in the future. We
make the first conditional with present simple in the If clause and will+ infinitive in the other
clause:
IF + SUBJECT + PRESENT SIMPLE, SUBJECT + WILL INFINITIVE

Ex: If I have time, I will help you.

04-P-G-2NDCOND
04.- SECOND CONDITIONAL. GENERAL RULE.

We use the second conditional to talk about things that are not probably going to happen in
the future or to talk about something which is impossible in the present. We make the second
conditional sentence with the past simple in the If clause and would + infinitive (Simple
conditional) in the other clause.
IF + SUBJECT + PAST SIMPLE, SUBJECT + WOULD + INFINITIVE
Ex: If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house. (This is not probably going to happen).
Ex: If I had time, I would help you. (I don’t have time so it is impossible for me to help you)
PAY ATTENTION!!!
In the second conditional when the verb in the if-clause is a form of be, we use were instead
of was. Although was is also accepted, were is recommended with all subjects.
Ex: If I were you, I would go to the dentist.

15-A-R-PHRV3
15.- PHRASAL VERBS. READ BRIAN’S STORY AND CHOOSE THE CORRECT ANSWER.
Some people might think that planning a
wedding isn’t a big deal, but believe me –it is. First
of all, my girlfriend and I had to figure out how we
wanted our big day to be, from the ceremony to
the smallest detail. It was so stressful that
sometimes we just felt like giving up. However, we
were in love and you know what they say. Love is
blind. That’s why we carried on planning our perfect wedding despite the stress. We wanted to
tell the world that we were going to love and look after each other for the rest of our lives.
A week before our wedding day we decided to eat out to celebrate that it was our last
weekend being single people. How stupid I was! I had always been very sceptical about being
very happy. I believed that if something was too good to be true, it probably was. However, I
was very surprised about what happened next.
When I arrived at the restaurant, my girlfriend looked very silent and sad, so I asked her if she
was ok. At first, she told me that she was very sorry, but she wanted to put off the wedding.
Then, when I told her that it was probably too late because everything was ready, she dropped
the bomb – she actually wanted to call it off and break up with me! I couldn’t believe it!
The following day my friends found out about our break-up and came to visit me. I was
devastated and unable to stop crying, although they did everything they could to cheer me up.
After a couple of weeks, I decided I had had enough. I couldn’t control people’s feelings for me
and if my ex-girlfriend didn’t want to marry me or see me anymore, I had to deal with it. From
that moment on, I started to get better and better every day.

1.- How did they start planning the wedding?

a.- They started planning the ceremony.
b.- They started thinking carefully about everything they wanted.
2.- How long did they think they were going to take care of each other?

3.- According to Brian, if something is too good to be true…

AGONY AUNT, AND MATCH THEM.

SUSAN:_____ JANE: _____ HARRIET: _____

SUSAN: We were planning to visit my mother-in-law with our two young children over Easter.
We asked her to be careful not to give our five-year-old daughter too much chocolate as she is
overweight. And she got furious! What can I do? I don’t want to argue with her.
JANE: My parents divorced when I was twelve. I chose to live with my dad because I loved
being with him, but my mum was heartbroken. My dad told me my mum had been unfaithful
to him, so the divorce had been her fault. Later, I found out he had cheated on her. I don’ want
to speak to him anymore. I hate him!
HARRIET: My sister says she and her husband need time to be together, so her four children
spend most of the time with our elderly parents. When I try to tell her that, at their age, it’s
too much for them, she says I’m just trying to spoil her chance of happiness. What can I do?
