4.7 Method Statements
Purpose
A method statement is a method of control that is used after a risk assessment of an operation
has been carried out. A method statement is used to control the operation and to ensure that all
concerned are aware of the hazards associated with the work and the safety precautions to be
taken.

Scope
All activities conducted by the company will take into consideration the impacts to its
employees, customers, clients and the environment. As a result, the company will write a
method statement as required for the job.

Responsibilities
Managing Director
 To review and approve all method statements

Contracts Coordinator and Senior Supervisor


 To write all method statements required by the company to fulfil the job.

Employees
 To provide the necessary information and support to the HSE Manager or Supervisor
when the method statement is being written.
 Execute their identified role in the method statement.

Procedure
 The HSE Manager and Supervisor shall write the method statement as it relates to the
job using the company form.
 The Managing Director will review all method statements and approve.
 The client shall approve the method statement before the job commences.
 A briefing of the method statement must take place on site before the job commences.

 A copy of the method statement must be kept available on the job site for inspection of
all personnel.
 After the job has been completed the method statement will be filed in the job file.

Method Statement should give details of the following at a minimum;


 The name of the originator and the date it was originated.
 Contractor or company name, address, telephone contact and email.
 Project name or Job name.
 Site address or location.
 Start and end time of task.
 Description of task or activity
 Sequence of the operation including risk assessment and risk control measures.
 The named person or persons who will be responsible for the entire operation and for
compliance of the Method Statement.
 Key personnel who are responsible for critical activities
 Tools Required, Key Materials and Essential Equipment
 Details of equipment that are required, including the weight size, power rating and the need
for any certification associated with the equipment.
 The location, means of ensuring stability of any lifting equipment that are to be used.
 Identification of the material storage, transportation and security issues.
 Specific Training of personnel who have functions that needs to demonstrate competence.
 Method of Safe Access and Egress to and from the work area along with the method for
ensuring emergency routes will be properly maintained.
 Hazardous Substances.
 Identifies environmental limitations such as wind speed, rain or temperature.
 Details of permits if required.
 Required Personal Protective Equipment and any other engineering control that is required
such as ventilation and gas detectors.
 Emergency Procedures.
 First Aid and Medical Facilities.
 Welfare Requirements.
 List of additional attachments or documents required for e.g. MSDS (current and approved),
job procedures, risk assessment, tool certificates etc.
 Method statement briefing records.
 Relevant signatures for prepared, reviewed and approval of Method Statement.
 The measures to be adopted to protect third parties not involved in the operations.
 The method in which any variation to the method statement will be authorized.
