Advantages of using online
collaborative tools
A Centralized hub for files, announcements, calendars,
etc.
• Collaboration solutions innately offer a centralized hub
wherein all data is located and from which it is all accessed
by the team.
• It also makes things more effective such as announcements
and calendars, as everyone can coordinate deadlines,
milestones, appointments, and personal availability without
fail.
File Sharing
• Since everyone with access can write in the same document
together in real-time, instant change reflection is possible across
all shared documentation.

Host Online Meetings

• Online tools promote better participation in collaborative
decision-making.
• Arranging these meetings requires only marking the calendar and
announcing them once.
• People can attend the meetings via their laptop, their mobile
device, or even their smart TV
Live Chat
• Chat and messaging tools are built-in features of most
collaboration platforms currently on the market.
• With real-time communication tied directly into the platform,
it’s easy to coordinate properly and all conversations are
properly and securely logged for later recall.
Tips to have a successful collaborative tool:

1. Choose easy, intuitive online collaboration tools to increase

adoption.
2. Pick a collaboration tool that supports all communication
methods.
3. Ensure your choice has scheduling features to help keep
projects on track.
4. Choose a dynamic file-sharing solution.
5. Choose a product with real-time collaboration.

5. Locate web sources by topic
Opensource – an openly
distributed program
code (including codes
that are free of charge)
that can be utilized and
modified by the end user
without restriction.
Multimedia resources

• These types of resources combine the use of several

media in computer applications.

• There are five basic types of media that can be

combined into the learning environment -- text, video,
sound, graphics and animation -- to provide a
powerful new tool for enhancing
the educational experience.
Finding images
Music and audio; webcasts

• A webcast is a (live) online

broadcast of the audio or
video feed from your
meeting or event.
• Terms such as web event,
web lecture, virtual event,
online seminar or webinar
are also often used.

What is an Online Learning
Community?

Virtual community

owns specific function of learning

and education
• It is a virtual entity which combines learning and
community together (Downes, 1999).

• One can learn not only online courses but also how to
interact with other participants.
“is a public or private destination on the internet that
addresses the learning needs of its members by
facilitating peer-to-peer learning.

…people work as a community to achieve a shared

learning objective”
If the classroom is already a learning
community, why have an Online Learning
Community?
Borderless Education

Distance Learning

To support in-class Learning

To support learning outside the
classroom

To enhance the social and

collaborative learning experience

To build a Professional Learning

Community
What happens in an Online
Learning Community?
• Communication Conversations
• Collaboration
• Collaborative discovery
• Content/knowledge Co-creation
• Sharing
• All within a comfortable, safe easy-to-use
environment
What tools can be used to build an
Online Learning Community?
Most appropriate will depend on
• Functionality
• Integration of content and community
• Management and control
• Security and privacy
• Online Collaboration is the process of connecting users
digitally to communicate in an online space.

• Online collaboration is usually supplemented using a

software system that lets team members chat using
video, audio and text.
Teaching in an Online Learning
Environment
• Teaching in this context offers ease in shifting the time and
place of online interaction.
• Online content may be presented in various formats in video,
text and in multimedia.
• There is provision for extended access to these online web-
based materials, the capacity of the net to access huge
volumes of content in practically all subjects, and the net’s
enabling feature to support human and machine interaction
both in synchronous and asynchronous modalities.
• To understand the context of teaching and learning in an online
learning environment, Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2000),
developed the “community of learning model” or the
“community of inquiry model”.

“What is Community of Inquiry Model?”

• Community of Inquiry model is a group of individuals
who collaboratively engage in purposeful critical
discourse and reflection to construct personal meaning
and confirm mutual understanding.
• It is an educational community of inquiry.
• The presences (cognitive, social, teaching) are the
independent elements or components that should be
sufficiently high to achieve meaningful online learning.
ACTIVITY TIME
1. communicate purposely in a trusting environment
2. learners are able to construct and confirm meaning
through sustained reflection and discourse
3. develop inter-personal relationships by way of protecting
their individual personalities
4. design of cognitive and social processes for realizing
outcomes
5. organizing learning experiences that should take place
Social presence

• ability of the participants to identify with community,

communicate purposefully in a trusting environment, and
develop inter-personal relationships by way of protecting
their individual personalities
• relates to the establishment of a supportive environment
where students can be themselves and can openly express
and share disagreements and viewpoints
Cognitive presence

• the extent which learners are able to construct and confirm

meaning through sustained reflection and discourse
• cognitive refers to mental activity, reasoning and thinking
how continuous thinking, reflecting and discourse result to
construction of knowledge and shared meaning
Teaching presence

• the design, facilitation, and direction of cognitive and social

processes for the purpose of realizing personally meaningful
and educationally worthwhile learning outcomes
• teaching presence includes teacher’s task in designing,
organizing, and facilitating learning experiences that should
take place first before the establishment of the learning
community.
Three (3) important roles of teachers in creating
teaching presence:
1. Design and organization of the learning experiences.
2. Devising and implementing activities to encourage
discourse and interaction between among students,
between the teacher and the student, and between
individual students and groups of students and content
resources.
3. Engaging in a variety of direct instruction in adding subject
matter expertise.

Learning Management System

• Course management software used to deliver educational and

training programs online.
• A software program that helps create, manage, and deliver
online educational programs.
• An online platform that enables the delivery of materials,
resources, tools, and activities to students both in and out of
the classroom environment. It allows teachers to offer tailored
instruction that can be accessed by students anytime, anywhere
without geographic constraints.
Why we need LMS?

• Tracking student progress through all educational

activities
• Management of course or subjects
• Exchange of information with students
• Management of students

Limitations of LMS
• Physical skills of hands on training can not be easily learned or
tested online.
• Tendency to focus on the technology and not on the student.
• Staff, Faculty, & Student Learning Curve.
• Suppresses creativity by limiting content delivery and
assessment to a few methods.
• System failure, poor network connectivity problems affect
effective learning.
• LMS can not fully replicate the On-Campus Learning
Environment.
