Class Participation Activity: Journal Article Review

Instructions. Read the journal article attached. Answer the following questions. Additional
references can be used to support your answers (do not use Cherry and McLeod). See rubric
on the next page.
NB. The same journal article is used on some items in the enabling assessment.

1. What can you say about the results of the study considering or in relation to the gender
of the participants?

The objective of the research was to identify the overlap between the SOC and the five
big personalities. Based on my analysis, it was not mentioned that gender was part of
the measures that could affect the overall results of the study. Based on the given
number of participants, there were enough; however, there was an imbalance in the
data between the number of men and women who participated in the study. Because of
the gender inequality among the participants, the statistical analysis was unclear. which
is why, if the study considers the gender of the participants, the numbers between men
and women should be close enough, or at least have the same amount.

2. Measures were said to have exhibited good reliability according to the researchers.
What about its validity?

To measure and gather participants, the researcher conducted an online survey that
was publicized on online platforms. It was mentioned in the limitations section that the
validity of the data was unclear due to the unbalanced number of participants per
gender. In some European countries, 60% of women outperform their male
counterparts in terms of academic achievement (Gender Balance in Research, Why Is so
Important?, n.d.). In the article, it is specified that the participants were Germans and
Swedes, and there was a total of 1842, of which the majority were women, which
resulted in an unclear validity.

3. The researchers employed cross sectional study. What type of research design would
have been helpful as well to gather better data and subsequently better results also?

Besides the cross-sectional study as a research design, there is also an alternative that
could be used to measure the data in this article, which is the longitudinal study. The
article mentioned that the analysis was lack of longitudinal facts. It is also mentioned
that longitudinal studies contain more detailed information that analyzes wide range of
variables which lessens the risk of unnoticed discrepancy. Having the discrepancy could
possibly lead to inaccurate statistical conclusion (Learning Hub | Unobserved
Heterogeneity, n.d.).
