CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

People’s population is reported to have increased steadily over the years with the current

figure standing at 7.4 billion. According to Roser (2016), growth rate will be increasing at 1.13%

per annum. This means that we need more food for survival particularly protein for growth and

development of human body. The rapid population growth of people also needs to increased the

demand for proteins that will be seen in some animals which have good source of essential

nutrients (FAD, 2010). However, it cannot be seen from ruminant animals because of their high

requirement for grazing land, high energy cost of production and low reproductive efficiency

(Roser, 2016).

In order to meet the animal protein needs of the ever growing world human population in

the short-term, efforts should be directed to the production of animals with short generation

interval, high reproductive efficiency and early maturity such as poultry (Mahmood, 2012). A

poultry enterprise can produce meat within seven weeks and have the first egg produced within

eighteen weeks of the first chick being hatched (Smith, 2011). The broiler industry has been a

progressive one and is quick to adopt innovations (Ravindran, 2012). Poultry has been reported to

be the most successful industry than any other animal industry and production standards have

continually improved over the past 50 years (Ravindran, 2012).

Broilers are ready for market between 6 to 7 weeks with male broilers currently reaching

a live weight of 2.5 kg at 33-35 days of age (Ravindran, 2012).The consumption of poultry meat

increased about four times from 3kg in 1963 to 11kg in 2003 (FAOSTAT, 2009). The greatest

consumption of poultry products is reported to occur in developing countries (Ravindran, 2012).

In these countries, meat production has increased resulting in expansion of the industry (Hossain,

2015). However, high feed cost is a major constraint to poultry production increase (Glatz, 2015).
The growth in the poultry industry is having a profound effect on the demand for feed and raw

materials (Ravindran, 2011).

The traditional plant protein sources used for poultry feeding are not grown at all in most

countries and farmers depend on imported feed or where they may be grown the cultivation is

insignificant to meet the demand of the livestock industry (Diarra, 2015). This results in a low

domestic production of poultry meat which has led to massive importation of poultry products.

This necessitates the need to increase research into locally available feed materials of low

economic value which can be used to reduce feed cost in the region (Ochetim, 2015).

The popularity of chicken meat is also manifested on the customs and eating habits of

Filipinos. No occasion is celebrated without fried chicken, tinola or adobong manok. Filipinos

love eating the latter menu items because chicken is very delicious, tender and palatable. Other

than its distinct taste, its price is very much lower compared to other meat products.

Introducing organic feeds in the local places in the Philippines will help the broiler

poultry to be more developed, sustainable and competitive. Knowing the effect of coconut meat

as organic feeds for broiler will be a great help and eye opener not only to the different

agricultural organization but also to the broiler poultry owner as the beneficiaries.

Conceptual Framework

This proposed study aims to investigate the effect of coconut meat as an

alternative protein source for broiler. Researchers believe that the protein came from the coconut

meat has a profound impact on broiler. Researchers can be viewed as an effective way to feed the

broiler using coconut meat. In the input of the study, what are the chemical components present

in the coconut meat that processes the ability to be organic feeds for broiler. For the process,

experimental research method using observation for data collection. For the output is the

proposed study about the effect of coconut (Cocos nucifera) meat as an alternative protein source

for broiler.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effect of coconut (Cocos nucifera) meat as an alternative

protein source for broiler.

This study aims to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the chemical components present in the coconut meat that processes the ability

to be an organic food for broiler?

2. What are the physical effect of the organic food to the broiler after experimentation as to:

 Height

 Mass

3. Is there a significant difference of height and mass between the control group and the

experimental group?

Null Hypothesis

The following hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance:

There is no significant difference on the Effect of Coconut meat as an alternative protein

source for broiler with a positive and negative control.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the effect of coconut meat in the height and mass of broiler.

It also seek or want to show what will might happen to the chicken broiler after feeding

the coconut meat. In this study researchers use ten (10) broiler chicks to observe, five (5) broilers

will be fed chicken feeds and the other five (5) broilers will fed a coconut meat. This research

study starts from January 13, 2019 and end of February 26, 2019 for a period of 45 days.

It primarily focuses on the determination of the potential of coconut meat as an organic

feeds for broiler.

The Coconut meat is from San Carlos City, Pangasinan and was utilized in the study. The

testing of the Organic feeds was conducted in Barangay Tandoc San Carlos City, Pangasinan.

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial for the following:

Poultry Owner. These are the main beneficiaries of the study. The results of this study

may be used for the development of broiler using coconut meat as there organic feeds. It will help

the poultry owner to have a sustainable and good growth of broiler.

Agricultural Companies / Farmers. This research will improve the current knowledge

about the broiler poultry and the use of coconut meat as protein source for broiler. This will also

help the companies and also the farmers to develop more organic feeds from organic materials.

Tandoc National High School Students. The result of this could help the students of

Tandoc National High School to have a better idea about the protein produce by coconut meat for

broiler.

Researcher. The researchers could put into practice or use what they have learned in this

study in future endeavours about the effect of coconut meat as alternative source for broiler.

Future Researcher. That they may put into practice the theories, concepts and principles

of research process that they have learned in the classroom. This research also could enhance

their knowledge in connection with their course as well as in the continuity of this study.
