Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about almost entirely
unexpected economic, social, and political difficulties. One of the most
affected areas is the health of the people. Many people suffer and die due to
the coronavirus. It is a transferrable disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It
is transmitted through a close contact between people. It can be spread
through coughing, sneezing and speaking or even breathing. Not only the
field of doctors, nurses, teachers, policeman are affected but also dentists.
Though dentists are not direct healthcare workers for respiratory diseases, we
must directly look into the mouth of the patients when treating a patient.
This was the biggest challenge for dentists. There has been limited face to
face contact between people. Schools, offices, businesses have shut downs
and dental clinics are no exemption with this. It was a high-risk for dentists to
check and treat patients. The passing of infections can occur through direct
contact with blood and saliva. Dental tools might be infected too when use to
patients. Thus, this must not an end for a dentist’s opportunity to care for
others. There are possible solutions that can be done. These are the following;
using personal protective equipment. It helps protect dentists from being
affected by virus. It is a barrier between infectious materials and bacteria. It
has the potential to stop the spreading of these bacteria. Dentists are
required to use PPE when in practice. Patients are required to wear PPE too
for their protection. Wearing facemask is also a must. It is mandatory not only
for health workers but for everyone. Patients too must wear this when talking
or in contact with people. Undergoing swab test before going in to the dental
clinic. Patients must undergo swab tests to know whether they are safe to
check or not. These protocols are required for both the dentist and patient.
However, not everyone can afford to undergo all of these processes. It may
have cost some people a lot of money. This is a hindrance for people to
continue taking good care of their tooth and practice oral hygiene. They
might not even risk their selves to go out and let the dentist check on their
tooth. Possible solution for this is to use online platforms to inform people in
practicing good hygiene for their tooth. Dentists can be invited in the news or
any social media to talk about oral hygiene in this pandemic. People can
watch it and may encourage them to practice good habits. Everyone with the
internet connection may be updated on how to properly care for their tooth.
Dentists can also promote effective products that can be used for those who
are undergoing issues and problems. There is no possible solution that can be

done with these issues. These are some of the issues encountered brought
about by the pandemic. Truly, health is greatly affected. The outbreak may
have affected a lot thus, it will not stop dentists to practice their profession
and continually care about oral hygiene of people. To end this, let us look at
the pandemic as an opportunity to discover and improve our profession for
the betterment of everyone.
