Digestive System

Five Steps of Digestion

This activity was designed for a 4th grade class as an assessment activity of
student knowledge on how the digestive system works.

After teaching students about the digestive system, the body part / organs
involved and the function of each body part / organ in the digestive system,
students were asked to complete this flipbook.

Each body part / organ has a separate page. On each page, students draw the
body part / organ and write a simple explanation of the role that body part /
organ plays in the digestive system.

This flip book can be displayed on a classroom or hallway bulletin board or as

part of a lap book with other information about the digestive system or other
human body systems.

Procedure:
1. Copy the following pages – one set per student

2. Students draw a picture showing the body part / organ and write a simple
explanation of the role the body part / organ plays in digestion.

3. After all pages are complete, cut and staple together at the top in order
(step 1 – 5) so each step is visible as a flap at the bottom.

4. Assessment: Ask students to ‘read’ their flipbook to you. Have them explain
how the digestive system works.

5. Display for other students and parents to see.

Staple the pages together to form a
flipbook like this
