Steam power plant

We consider the steam power plant represented in figure 1. We assume that this power plant works under Carnot
cycle conditions. The power plant’s boiler receives heat from a solar concentrator at 370 ◦ C and heat waste is
released in the condenser to the exterior at an ambient temperature of 20 ◦ C. The steam travels through the power
plant at a rate of 0.2 kg/s

1. (8 pts) Link every component of the power plant to the corresponding Carnot’s cycle process:

Boiler (1 → 2) □ □ Isothermal Expansion

Turbine (2 → 3) □ □ Isothermal Compression
Condenser (3 → 4) □ □ Adiabatic Compression
Pump (4 → 1) □ □ Adiabatic Expansion

2. (10 pts) Complete the P-V diagram bellow:

3. (10 pts) Show that the value of the thermal efficiency of this power plant is 54%

4. (8 pts) The power plant receives a rate of 25 kW of heat, deduce the net work rate produced by this power
plant.

5. (10 pts) Assuming the turbine (process 2 → 3) to be adiabatic and steady, show that its energy balance*
reduces to:

Ẇturbine,out = ṁ(h2 − h3 )

6. (10 pts) If the water quality in state (3) is x = 0.15, show that Ẇturbine,out = 376.47 kW

7. (10 pts) Deduce that Ẇpump,in = 362.97 kW

* we neglect the change in potential and kinetic energy

8. (14 pts) By studying the energy balance of the pump (process 4 → 1), find the value of P1 .
Use the following approximation for the enthalpy of a compressed liquid:

h ≃ h f @T + v f @T (P − Psat@T )

9. (8 pts) The exit area of the turbine is A = 0.5 m2 , give the velocity of water at the exit of the turbine V3 .

10. (12 pts) The condenser is considered as heat exchanger between water and air as ideal gas with constant
specific heat c p . Explain why the mass flow rate of the air is giving by:

Q̇L
ṁair =
c p ∆hair
