 WHAT IS A
NARRATIVE TEXT?
A narrative text is a type of text that tells
a story or describes a sequence of events.
The purpose of narrative text is to
entertain the reader with the story which
can be fiction or non-fiction.

For example: folktale, legend, and fable.

 LEGEND
A legend is kind of a folklore. It’s a
traditional story that has been passed on for
generations. Legends usually tell events or
figures that are considered important in
the culture or traditions of a region or
nation.
 Orientation, this section is the
initial part which contains the
introduction of time, place,
character, and character traits.
Complication, this section
GENERIC STRUCTURE contains problems or conflicts.
Resolution, this section contains
problems that have been resolved.
Re-orientation, in this section the
writer conveys the closing in the
form of a moral message from the
story. (This section is optional.)
 LANGUAGE
FEATURES
1. Using simple past tense (S+V2)
2. Using time conjunctions (then,
before that, when)
3. Using adverb of time (once upon a
time, one day)
4. Using action verbs

ORIENTATION :
TOBA LAKE
In a village in north Sumatra, a farmer living. He was a farmer who
worked diligently farming land, although not large. He worked hard
enough to be their needs. In fact, he has enough to get married, but
he still chose live alone. On a sunny morning, the farmers are
fishing in the river.
“Hopefully this week I got a big fish,” he said in the heart. Some
time after the hook was thrown, that’s fishhook wiggle. He
immediately set the hook. Farmers cheer that after he got a big
enough fish.

REASON : Because the text contains the description or prefix of the character to
be told, which contains the background of the event which will help the
reader or listener to understand the text
COMPLICATION :
TOBA LAKE
That’s farmers fell in love with that fish-woman and wanted to marry her. And they become
husband and wife. But, there was a promise that must be agreed, that is they should not be told
that the origin of a fish Princess. If that promise abandoned, then there will be a terrible
accident.

One day, Putera got a job deliver food and drink to the field where his father was working. But
Putera did not fulfill its tasks. Farmers waited for her son, while holding thirsty and hungry. He
immediately returned to the house. The Farmers saw Putera playing ball. Farmers became
angry while pinching his son’s ear.

“Scallywag! Not know themselves! Basic fried fish!” indignation of the farmers, without
conscious have such words.
In this paragraph, there has been a conflict. It is marked by the state of the main
REASON :
character starting to face a problem until the problem is the climax. shown in the
story he violated the agreement he had made with his wife by calling his son a fish
child
RESOLUTION :
TOBA LAKE
After the farmers say the words, then and there the child and his wife
disappeared. disappear without trace and former. Impressions of the
former legs, sudden gush of water was very swift and the downpours.
Farmers village and all the surrounding villages submerged. Overflow
water was very high and wide and formed a lake. The lake was eventually
known as Lake Toba. While the small island in the middle known as
Samosir Island.

REASON : Because the paragraph in the story shows a decrease in conflict or the end
of the story from Toba Lake. problem solving begins to appear until it
finds the end of the story.
