QUESTION 1

1.1 Two vehicles leave simultaneously from a fork in a road. Vehicle A travels at
a velocity of 85 km/h north-east. Vehicle B travels at 104 km/h directly east.

Calculate the velocity of vehicle A relative to the velocity of vehicle B. (4)

1.2 An aeroplane flies to its destination, 300 km directly east of its starting point.
The pilot wants to complete the flight in 50 minutes. There is a south-westerly
wind blowing at 10 m/s.

Calculate the velocity of the aeroplane and the direction of the flight. (6)

1.3 A bullet is fired at an angle of 33º to the horizontal and at a velocity of


410 m/s.

Calculate the following:

1.3.1 The maximum height reached by the bullet (2)

1.3.2 The horizontal displacement when the bullet hits the ground (3)

2.1 A motor revolving at 3 600 r/min slows down uniformly to 2 400 r/min in
4 seconds.

Calculate the following:

2.1.1 The angular acceleration of the motor (3)

2.1.2 The number of revolutions the motor makes in 4 seconds (2)

2.2 The force on a crankshaft with a length of 2,4 m changes from 0 N to 400 N
during one revolution.

3.1 Define Newton's second law. (2)

3.2 A car travels on a horizontal track at a velocity of 54 km/h. The car is brought
to rest over a distance of 6 000 cm. The frictional resistance is 200 N and the
mass of the car is 850 kg.

Calculate the following:

3.2.1 The retardation

3.2.2 The braking force

3.3 A bale with a mass of 2 tons is pulled at a constant velocity up a smooth


inclined plane, 30 m long onto a platform 5 m above the ground.

Calculate the following:

QUESTION 4

4.1 Define the term shearing force. (1)

4.2 A light beam ABCDE is 11 m long and is supported at B and E. B is 2 m from


the left end and E is at the right end. C is 2 m to the right of B and D is 4 m to
the right of C. The beam carries point loads of 5 kN and 4 kN at points A and
D respectively. A uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m is between point C and
point D.

4.2.1 Draw a neat, labelled diagram of the beam described above. (2)

4.2.2 Calculate the reactional forces at the supports (B and E). (3)

4.2.3 Calculate the shearing force at point C. (1)

4.2.4 Calculate the bending moments at points B, C and D. (3)

4.2.5 Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagrams with ALL
the main values indicated on the diagram in QUESTION 4.2.1. (5)

QUESTION 5

5.1 State TWO characteristics of liquids or fluids. (2)

5.2 A water pump with a piston diameter of 42 cm and a stroke length of 55 cm


operates at a pressure of 857 kPa.

Calculate the following:

5.2.1 The volume of water delivered per stroke in m3 (3)

5.2.2 The force exerted by the piston (2)

5.2.3 Work done per operation stroke (2)

5.3 Calculate the force exerted by the ram piston if an effort of 200 N is applied to
the lever of a hydraulic press. The mechanical advantage of the lever is
15 and the efficiency on the press is 93%. The diameter of the plunger is
0,1 times that of the diameter of the ram. (5)

5.4 The plungers of a three-cylinder pump have diameters of 93 mm each and a


stroke length of 40 cm. The fluid pressure during the delivery stroke is
900 kPa.

Calculate the power required to drive the pump at 200 r/min if the efficiency of
the motor is 90%. (6)

6.1 Name TWO possible types of stresses in materials. (1)

6.2 A square steel bar with sides 20 cm wide is subjected to a compressive force
of 200 kN. The modulus of elasticity for the steel is 210 GPa.

Calculate the following:

6.2.1 The stress in the material (2)

6.2.2 The strain (3)

6.2.3 The decrease in length if the rod has a length of 3 m (2)

6.3 The FIGURE on the DIAGRAM SHEET (attached), shows a steel bar which is
axially loaded by a tensile load of 600 kN.

Calculate the total change in length which will occur in the steel bar if
E = 200 GPa. (6)

QUESTION 7

7.1 Define Charles' gas law and draw a graph to illustrate your definition. (4)

7.2 A cylinder contains 0,11 m3 of nitrogen gas at a pressure of 1 700 kPa and
temperature of 12 ºC. The temperature decreases to 2 ºC while the volume
remains constant.

Calculate the following:

7.2.1 The pressure at the lowest temperature

7.2.2 The mass of nitrogen gas if the gas constant is 260 J/kg.k

7.3 A piece of cast iron, 5 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm is heated from a temperature of


15 ºC to 47 ºC. The coefficient of linear expansion of the cast iron material is
10 x 10-6/ºC.

Calculate the final volume of the piece of cast iron in m3. (5)
