This question paper consists of 6 pages, 1 diagram sheet, 1 formula sheet and
1 information sheet.
3. Number the answers according to the numbering system used in this question
paper.
QUESTION 1
1.1 Two vehicles leave simultaneously from a fork in a road. Vehicle A travels at
a velocity of 85 km/h north-east. Vehicle B travels at 104 km/h directly east.
1.2 An aeroplane flies to its destination, 300 km directly east of its starting point.
The pilot wants to complete the flight in 50 minutes. There is a south-westerly
wind blowing at 10 m/s.
Calculate the velocity of the aeroplane and the direction of the flight. (6)
1.3.2 The horizontal displacement when the bullet hits the ground (3)

QUESTION 2
2.1 A motor revolving at 3 600 r/min slows down uniformly to 2 400 r/min in
4 seconds.
2.2 The force on a crankshaft with a length of 2,4 m changes from 0 N to 400 N
during one revolution.
QUESTION 3
3.2 A car travels on a horizontal track at a velocity of 54 km/h. The car is brought
to rest over a distance of 6 000 cm. The frictional resistance is 200 N and the
mass of the car is 850 kg.
QUESTION 4
4.2.1 Draw a neat, labelled diagram of the beam described above. (2)
4.2.2 Calculate the reactional forces at the supports (B and E). (3)
4.2.5 Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagrams with ALL
the main values indicated on the diagram in QUESTION 4.2.1. (5)

QUESTION 5
5.3 Calculate the force exerted by the ram piston if an effort of 200 N is applied to
the lever of a hydraulic press. The mechanical advantage of the lever is
15 and the efficiency on the press is 93%. The diameter of the plunger is
0,1 times that of the diameter of the ram. (5)
Calculate the power required to drive the pump at 200 r/min if the efficiency of
the motor is 90%. (6)

QUESTION 6
6.2 A square steel bar with sides 20 cm wide is subjected to a compressive force
of 200 kN. The modulus of elasticity for the steel is 210 GPa.
6.3 The FIGURE on the DIAGRAM SHEET (attached), shows a steel bar which is
axially loaded by a tensile load of 600 kN.
Calculate the total change in length which will occur in the steel bar if
E = 200 GPa. (6)
[14]
QUESTION 7
7.1 Define Charles' gas law and draw a graph to illustrate your definition. (4)
7.2 A cylinder contains 0,11 m3 of nitrogen gas at a pressure of 1 700 kPa and
temperature of 12 ºC. The temperature decreases to 2 ºC while the volume
remains constant.
7.2.2 The mass of nitrogen gas if the gas constant is 260 J/kg.k
