QUESTION 3

FIGURE 2 on DIAGRAM SHEET 1 shows a series-parallel circuit with a 220 V supply.

Determine the following:

3.1 Resistance in branch A (3)

3.2 Resistance in branch B (3)

3.3 Total resistance offered by the circuit (3)

3.4 Power consumed by the circuit (2)

QUESTION 4

A load of 13 kN is suspended from the apex of a pair of shear legs.

Graphically determine the force acting in each leg and backstay by using the following
specifications:

 Length of shear legs = 5 m

 Distance between the shear legs at the base = 2 m
 Backstay = 8 m
 Apex overhang = 3 m
 Force scale: 1 mm = 1 kN
 Linear scale: 10 mm = 1 m [10]

QUESTION 5

5.1 A block rests on top of an inclined plane. The weight of the block parallel to
the plane is 20 N. The weight of the block perpendicular to the plane is 80 N.
It is found that a force of 50 N parallel to the plane will just move the block
upwards along the plane at a constant speed.

Calculate the following:

5.1.1 Frictional force (3)

5.1.2 Coefficient of friction between the block and the plane (3)

5.2 Give FOUR laws of sliding friction. (4)

QUESTION 6

FIGURE 3 on DIAGRAM SHEET 1 shows a plane laminar.

Analytically determine the position of the centroid with respect to OX and OY

respectively. ALL dimensions on the laminar are in millimetres. NO marks will be
awarded for using the graphical method. [20]

QUESTION 7

FIGURE 4 on DIAGRAM SHEET 2 shows a cantilever frame structure.

7.1 Draw a neat labelled force diagram next to the question number in the
ANSWER BOOK and graphically determine the magnitude and nature of the
forces acting on the frame shown in FIGURE 4. (9)

Use the following scale: A linear scale of 1cm = 0,5 m and force scale of 1cm =
1kN.

7.2 Reproduce the table below next to the question number in the
ANSWER BOOK and tabulate your findings obtained in question 7.1.
