The Passive infrared sensor and its uses

The passive infrared sensor is an electronic sensor. It measures the infrared
light that radiates from objects in its vicinity (Wikipedia,2023). Passive infrared
sensors are used in making motion detectors, security, and automatic lighting
applications (Wikipedia,2023). According to MDPI’s Sensors Journal, the passive
infrared sensor can be exploited in manufacturing a human movement detector
(Yun & Lee, 2014).

Human Movement Detection

Yun and Lee have been able to create a human movement detecting system
based specifically on the PIR sensor. They also incorporated machine learning
technologies for classifying the direction of motion, the distance of the body from
the PIR sensors, and speed. Not only that, but they were also successful in
identifying the walking subject. The PIR is perfect for this because of its low
power consumption and low cost (Yun & Lee, 2014).
They have come to this conclusion by studying PIR sensor-based applications
in smart environments, indoor human tracking with PIR sensors, and human
movement detection with PIR Digital Outputs. For example, the PIR motion
sensor is used to reduce the standby power consumption of lighting devices in
smart environments (Yun & Lee, 2014).

The infrared levels radiated from a certain object are measured by the PIR
sensor. In addition, the PIR sensor can measure up to about 6 meters. With the help
of the PIR sensor, one can detect the presence of the human being as long as he/she
is within the range.
The advantages of the PIR sensors include their small-size, affordability, user-
friendliness, and resilience (Waseem,2017). These sensors work by sensing the
temperature of an object. If the temperature of an object is above zero, it will emit
heat in the form of infrared radiation. Basically, PIR sensors work by detecting
energy given off by other objects (Waseem,2017).

Implementation of IOT Based Animal Detection System

This is a system that uses the PIR motion sensor with the help of an ultrasonic
sensor to protect the crops from intruders. Firstly, as soon as it detects the presence
of an animal it sends an input signal to the controller. Then, a sound will be turned
on to divert the animal (Ayushi,2023). During night, lights will flash and a message
will be sent to the farmer to alert him/her of any suspicious behavior.

PIR Sensor Based Security System

PIR sensors can also be used to detect intruders by sensing their presence and
alerting the homeowners or authorities. This is why PIR sensors can be heavily
utilized in the area of security. This application uses the PIR sensor to detect the
burglar or intruder. It also turns on the lights and the webcam if any type of motion
is detected to alert the owner (Biswa, 2013).
