The Social Menace Of Drug Addiction

 In ancient Egypt, physician prescribed berries like figs and dates mixed with caster oil as laxatives.
 Chinese and Greeks used opium for its pain- relieving properties.
 Hindus resorted to cannabis and henbane leaves as an anesthetic.
 In modern society, drug treat medical and psychological disorders.
Drug Independence?
Coloma (2004) states that drug dependence is the overuse of a drug without due regard to accepted medical practice resulting in
the individual’s physical, mental, emotional, or behavioral impairment.
According to Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Drug is defined as follows:
Clinical Definition: is a therapeutic substance other than food used in the prevention, diagnoses, alleviation, treatment or cure of
disease in humans or animals.
General Definition: is a substance aside from food intended to affect the structure or function of a physiological system like the
human body.
Popular Definition: refers mainly to chemical or plant- derived substances that affect the body’s psychological, behavioral, or
physical functions and leads to varying degrees of dependence or addiction
-Drug addiction- pertains to dependency on drug. Unpleasant withdrawal symptoms appear unless the person is taking the
substance. Addictive drugs make a person crave for or make him/her feel an overwhelming urge to continue taking the drug, even
after withdrawal symptoms have disappeared.
Addiction
Not having control over doing, taking, or using something, until it becomes harmful. Being addicted to something means having a
difficult time without it during the day. (gambling, gaming, food addiction photo)
Classification of Dangerous Drugs According to the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1972:
Prohibited drugs: which include all the drugs that produce psychological effects of narcotics or those that relieve pain and induce
sleep (e.g.,cocaine, LSD, marijuana, and opium and its derivatives)
Regulated drugs: which include self- inducing sedatives, such as barbiturates, amphetamines, or other hypnotic drugs or
compounds that produce the same physiological effects
 According to Republic Act No. 9165
drug abuse involves the usage of illegal substances. However, any drug can be abused, regardless if it is bought from a
pharmacy or from someone who is not a medical professional.
Who are penalized by the anti- drug law?
 USER. Cultivator Financier
 PUSHER. Importer. Protector /Coddler
 POSSESOR. Manufacturer

 Sale, Trading, Administration, Dispensation, Delivery, Distribution and Transportation.
 Maintanance of Den, Dive or Resort.
 Employees and Visitors of Den, Dive or Resort
PENALTY:
Life imprisonment to death + Php500k to Php10M fine for Dangerous Drugs.
Imprisonment of 12 years and 1 day to 20 years + Php 100k to Php500k fine for CPECs and for the “protector/ coddler”

Possession of Dangerous Drugs. Life imprisonment to death

 Cultivation or Culture of Plants Classified as Dangerous Drugs or are Sources Possession of Equipment, instrument,
apparatus and other paraphernalia for Dangerous Drugs.
