1. Surface Treatment and Painting Process
1.0 Surface Treatment
1.0.1 All surfaces to be painted shall be blasted (40 – 60 microns) in accordance to
Sa.2.5.
1.0.2 Prior to blasting, the sharp edges of the surface to be painted shall be rounded, the
surface shall be washed using mild detergent to remove oil, grease and other
contamination followed by thorough rinsing.

1.1 Painting Process


1.1.1 The painting specification is as detailed below:

The finishing colour of steel structure is Grey RAL7000 while hand railing is
yellow RAL1021.
1.1.2 The painting materials and surface of the structure shall be inspected before
painting.
1.1.3 Brushing, spraying or other suitable methods shall be used depending on the
kinds of paints, surfaces, and materials to be painted.
1.1.4 Blasted surface shall be coated with primer within 4 hours to avoid deterioration
of the surface.
1.1.5 All edges, crevices, corners, bolts and nuts, welds and other complex shapes shall
be carefully spray painted.
1.1.6 Painting shall be completed within the shortest possible time to avoid any
contamination between coats. Drying time shall be allowed before the next coat
can be applied.
1.1.7 Film thickness and appearance shall be checked using elcometer after 24 hours
and visual inspected after curing of each coating layer.
1.1.8 Subsequent coating shall be applied after the inspected result meets the painting
specification. The coating shall be free from runs, sags, lifting, peeling and
discoloration.
1.1.9 Any contamination between the coats shall be removed by washing with fresh
water or suitable solvent if necessary

1.2 Precaution Measure and Repair Action
1.2.1 Ensure all painted surface to be free from dust, oil and grease prior to coating.
1.2.2 Painting work shall not be executed under humid environment or surface is wet
due to water condensation.
1.2.3 Ensure relative humidity shall be less than 85% before commencement of
blasting work using RH gauge or hygrometer.
1.2.4 Ensure steel surface temperature shall be at least 3°C above dew points using
steel temperature gauge.
1.2.5 Repair action is to be carried out if there is non-conformities being observed or
lack of dry film thickness.
