Chapter I

Introduction

Mathematics plays a pivotal role in our daily lives and in society. It gives

us a way to understand patterns and predict the future. For some reason,

mathematics also makes individuals problematic in finding solutions. Many

students struggle when solving mathematical problems since it involves

logical reasoning and mathematical concepts to solve complex problems. It

is challenging, and majority of students are frequently asking their academic

instructor to help them solve mathematical problems with their strategies and

methods. Even so, students are still experiencing difficulties solving

mathematical problems.

A student’s ability to comprehend word problems may be significantly

impacted by their reading comprehension proficiency. While some students

perceive the word problem as easily understood, others view it as a serious

issue since they are unable to translate the word problem’s primary ideas

into a numerical equation. The student may integrate any mathematical word

problem much more quickly and easily with the aid of analytical skills

(Calder, 2010). They help individuals effectively solve complex problems by

breaking them down into smaller, more manageable

components.Understanding and possessing strong analytical skills is

essential for students studying mathematics. These skills enable them to

think critically, analyze patterns, and identify the most suitable problem-

solving strategies. Moreover, analytical skills are also highly transferable,

meaning that they can be applied to various real-life scenarios and academic

disciplines beyond mathematics.

God will assist us when we are struggling to find solutions to our issues.

In the scripture, Hebrews 2:18, “Since He himself has gone through suffering

and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested,” is a verse that

promises to assist us with life’s challenges, including figuring out math

problems. It also inspires us to trust in our ability to understand and develop

under the Lord’s direction. We should reach out and take hold of His hand

when we fall, for we all know that He will assist us no matter how big the

issue is, and He will lead us in the correct direction.

In line with this, the researcher would like to determine the level of

analytical skills of Grade 11 STEM and ABM students in solving

mathematical problems. The researcher will also explore the importance of

analytical skills in solving mathematical problems and provide tips on how to

improve these skills. The findings of this research will contribute to the

existing body of knowledge on mathematical education and student

performance. Identifying the level of analytical skill among students can help

inform educational policies and interventions that target areas for

improvement in mathematical problem-solving. Overall, investigating the

level of analytical skill of students in mathematical problem-solving is crucial

for enhancing mathematics education. By identifying the strengths and

weaknesses in students' analytical abilities, educators can develop effective

teaching methodologies that empower students to become proficient

problem-solvers in mathematics and beyond.
