CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of The Study

In today's advanced period, human life can no longer be detached from the mass media.

Mass media has become a symbol and a characteristic that draws the public's attention to a

variety of messages and data in a broad way. One of the mass media stages that fascinate

various age groups is film, which starts as a child and moves up to adulthood. In addition, films

provide a communication medium with sound properties that make effective visual effects

affect an audience as large as those of the general public: Effendy, 2003). Observing a movie

is becoming a common activity these days. Individuals have different purposes in observing

the motion picture, such as reviving, investing time, gathering data and perspective, learning

another language, and attempting to understand society. A large majority of people want to

observe, regardless of their state of life, whatever its foundation, gender, and age. It's not like

in big cities, but also in small towns people are watching motion pictures. Technological

advances such as the web and smartphones allow individuals to watch films in any place or on

any device, Aquaman 2018).

According to Bhasin (Christian, 2016, p. 13), a patriarchal society is one in which males

are given greater status than women, are more dominating in society, politics, and other spheres

of life, and are regarded as an integral component of men so that they may fully govern women.

Men and women are essentially the same, according to Jung (Handayani, 2008, p. 164), with a

few minor psychological distinctions. But civilization has a culture, and cultures lead to

distinctions between men and women.

Since he follows the classic legend structure of forgiveness and charity, Aquaman is

depicted as a true hero. For instance, in one of the Manta David Kane, Aquaman's real main

rival arranges to protect human beings from a potential nuclear explosion. Be that as it may, he

separations himself from these heroic qualities—and not as it were since of his superpowers.

Aquaman reprises the concept of classical heroism, and at the same time, he is denied of the

feelings characterizing heroes such as Aeneas, Ulysses, and Hector, such as kindness and

pietas. In the development of the modern hero, this need is mirrored by the social generation

of hegemonic manliness, encouraging the meeting of the discursive generation, which

characterizes true manliness as a complete rejection of gentility, which is considered an inverse.

Hence, through this development, Aquaman is fair one among the numerous ‘true’ superheroes

following the re-productive standards of the cis-hetero patriarchal framework.

Women are a negative stereotype in society. women are considered frail, passionate, and

work as housewives, and indeed ladies are as it were considered devices of sexuality in a

relationship. This at that point gets to be the reason why women are seen as moment lesson

people underneath men so that women don't have the correct to decide their possess lives

(Subhan, 2004, p. 39). According to Sutanto (2017), generalizations approximately women

making the film world allow birth to women's activist movies. Separated from that, the birth of

women's activist movies was driven by the reality that movies tend to develop women's reality

in a one-sided way and ended up a traditionalist constraint supporting patriarchal philosophy

(Zoonen, 1992, p. 81).

Therefore, the author chooses the topic of the relationship between women's struggle with

patriarchy and feminism to study the conflict depicted in the film Quaman and explains it,

because this research analyzes and discusses the relationship between patriarchy and feminism
in women, with the help of major post-structuralist literary criticism that will be used develop

an understanding of concepts and conclude. In addition, the writer also uses narrative elements

to look into key scenes from the film that have an association with women's defense and

patriarchy. As a consequence, the author's interest was to choose research on "women's struggle

in patriarchal society" as depicted through Aquaman: patriarchy, fantasy, feminism, and

adventure.

1.2 Statements Problem of the Study

Aquaman Movie. Researchers used documentation study data collection techniques by framing

content analysis using the media (film) used to complete the research. The Aquaman film is 2

hours 22 minutes long. Documents and other bibliographic sources are journals, theses, and

theses. The literature review studied by the author includes the study of Film as a Media of

Analysis.

1.4 Objectives of The Study

film Aquaman (2018).

1.6 Systematical Presentation

Three chapters are included in this thesis proposal:

The introduction to the study, which includes background information and problem

statements, is the first chapter of this study. scope and limitation of the study, Objectives of

The study, the functions of the study, and the systematic presentation.

An analysis of relevant studies, a review of the literature, and a theoretical framework

are included in the other part of this study. The writer refers to past studies carried out in this

area and looks at the present study concerning those studies. The purpose of these associated

studies is to identify similarities and differences in each earlier study carried out by different

authors.
CHAPTER 2

RELATED STUDIES, REVIEW OF LITERATURE, AND

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1 Related Studies

Several studies have been undertaken about the influence of patriarchy and resistance to

feminism. The following is a collection of three studies from different universities, journal

articles, student undergraduate theses, and undergraduate student theses that focus on the

relationship between patriarchy and feminism in literary works that the authors have collected

as a reference, not only showing similarity but also the different studies that they were involved

in:

The first research entitled "The Struggles of Women Against Patriarchy in Lady Of Scandal

By Tina Gabrielle: Feminist Approach (2020) of the English Department, Putera Batam

University focuses on patriarchal relations and its relation to women's struggle against

patriarchal culture in the film "Lady of Scandal." This research aims to analyze how the

storyline of this film shows the movement efforts made by women against patriarchy to gain

their existence as women. It is divided into three things, namely women's intellectuals, being

themselves, and women's freedom to actualize themselves. The researcher used the quantitative

descriptive method, and her theory on women's existence was based on Simone de Beauvoir's

(2016) Feminist approach. The results of his research show that the efforts of the women's

feminist movement against patriarchal culture are that humans are considered as existing

creatures, examining how humans exist in this world with their consciousness.
The second study conducted by Farida Hannum Siagian in 2018 from Medan University

was entitled "Feminism in Patriarchal Society Reflected in the Main Character of Perempuan

Berkalung Turban Movie". The purpose of this research is to examine the types of feminism,

as well as how patriarchal Feminism plays out in Annisa's main role in Perempuan Berkalung

Turban. Qualitative characterization methods were used to carry out this research. The most

dominant radical feminists who have emerged are reflected in the main character Annisais.

Annisa is a fierce and rebellious woman. This study aims to analyze the main character,

which can be interpreted as the main character in Annisa, and the sentences in the film, and to

find that the main character reflects feminism in a patriarchal society.

The third study was collected from a journal article entitled "An Analysis of How

Women's Struggle Portrayed From The Main Character in The Movie "Little Women" (2019)

by Sutrisno, B., Nurhasanah, N.P. and Rachmawati, B. (2023) from the Mulya Pratama

College of Economics, STIBA IEC University, Jakarta. The research aims at finding and

investigating how women's problems can be detected in novels. In this study, researchers

sought to use the methods of Qualitative Research. The analysis of relevant problems will be

carried out using two data sources, i.e. the Primary and Secondary Data Sources. I was able to

gain a greater understanding of this story and the conflict experienced by the main character,

than as a woman, in those circumstances.

The three studies referred to above can be seen as having similar or different results. The

general impression is that all the studies mentioned have a common theme in their analysis of

women's struggle with patriarchy and women's feminism. Furthermore, the theories of

patriarchy and feminists were used in all three studies using qualitative descriptive methods.

On the other hand, in the type of research, Teruma's difference can be seen: whereas. The
first two are theses and the third is a journal article. The first and second research objects are

different films and the third research object is novel. To show the efforts of women against

patriarchy, the first analysis of the narrative and plot of the film Lady of Scandal20 is

presented. The other study looks at what type of feminism is in the film Perempuan

Berkarung Turban (2018).
