WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?
• Social media refers to the means of interactions
among people in which they create, share,
and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual
communities and networks
SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION
• Social media addiction is an unhealthy dependence on
interactive platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram. Like most dependencies, social media
addiction manifests as overuse and difficulty in
abstaining. Ironically, one common effect of the
problem is social isolation
ADDICTIVE NATURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
• Using social media can lead to physical and psychological
addiction because it triggers the brain's reward system to
release dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical. Dopamine is
actually a neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger
between neurons) involved in neurological and
physiological functioning.
SOCIAL MEDIA USE BY YOUNG ADULTS

• According to the Pew Research Center , here are the top social media platforms used by
young adults ages 18–29:
• YouTube: 95%
• Instagram: 71%
• Facebook: 70%
• Snapchat: 65%
• TikTok: 48%
NEGATIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION ON THE
MENTAL HEALTH OF PAKISTANI YOUTH :
Many of the detrimental social media effects on mental health for today’s
young adults of pakistan, the first generation of digital natives, reflect habits
they may have developed as teenagers. Adolescents are the age group at
greatest risk of developing social media addiction, due to their ongoing
brain development and identity formation. Some of these effects are
connected to the way social media takes advantage of our innate social
instincts. But other effects are simply the result of the fragmentation of our
attention and the over-investment of time in social media at the expense of
other activities. These effects include:
1. Heightened anxiety from a “fear of missing out,” or FOMO
2. Lowered self-esteem due to constant upward social comparisons
3. Poor concentration and memory due to frequent shifts in focus
4. Social media has negative impact on academic performance
5. Impaired performance at work
6. Neglect of real-life relationships with friends and family
7. Disrupted sleep and the associated cascade of poor mental health effects
8. “Technostress” from the perceived need to stay current with social media
9. Lowered rates of physical activity
10. Decreased overall sense of life satisfaction
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF SOCIAL
MEDIA ADDICTION
• For oneself, keeping track of how much time truly spent on
social media is an excellent start to self-reflection and an
understanding how social media plays a part in the life of any
individual. Taking time to stay away from screens or even an
extended hiatus from social media platforms can help altogether
reduce the risk of social media addiction.
• For teenagers and other young adults pakistan, the consistent
limiting of screen time is essential to the treatment of social
media addiction. Furthermore, creating and adhering to
boundaries set in place to protect the individual from
succumbing to the pressures of social media can further help
rehabilitate from social media addiction. With severe mental
health issues and a serious case of social media addiction,
professional intervention may be necessary.
