This diagram represents the negative effects regarding the overuse of social media. It explains

how it can affect ones mental health. Excessive use of social media may aid to sleep issues if it

gets between sleep hours. Staying up late scrolling over social media can increase the risk of a

multitude of sleep issues. Too much radiation can cause neurological disease and can damage

eyesight. One of the negative effects of social media that is very common is procrastination.

Engaging on social media too much may aid to procrastination that can lead to poor time

management.

The 2 more of the following refers to mental health conditions that includes depression and

anxiety. As one continuously use social media, there is a possibility that one may encounter

violent content and cyberbullying which should be avoided immediately. It can alter one’s

frame of mind. As for now, cyberbullying has been very common lately. As for the last one, it

can possibly hinder ones social skills. It can hinder ones ability to engage in face-to-face

communication. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. They may miss out on

opportunities to develop their interpersonal skills.

1.2. Scope and Limitations

This study focuses on the negative effects of excessive use of social media on academic

performance of the Senior High School students in Mindanao State University. This study

aims on how the overuse of social media can have a large impact on the daily lives of the

students. It is limited to social media platforms that can alter ones mental health. The results

of this study will be applicable only to the respondents of this study and will not be used as

a measure to the effects of excessive use of social media on academic performance of the

students who do not belong to the population of this study.

1.3. Definition of terms

1.7.1. Social media. According to Research Gate, social media is defined as the set of

interactive Internet applications that facilitate creation, curation, and sharing of user-generated

content. They are an increasingly pervasive aspect of everyday life. One can view social media

not as something that separate from physical reality, but as an integral part of an interwoven

social landscape.

1.7.2. Cyberbullying. According to Kids Health, cyberbullying is the use of technology to

harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. Online threats and mean, aggressive, or

rude texts, tweets, posts, or messages all count. So does posting personal information, pictures,

or videos designed to hurt or embarrass someone else.

1.7.3. Mental Health. According to World Health Organization, mental health is a state of

mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realization of their

abilities, and contribution to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-

being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, to build

relationships and to shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. It is

crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.

1.7.4. Addiction. According to American Society of Addiction Medicine, Addiction is a

treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits,

genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction use

substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful

consequences.

1.7.5. Procrastination. According to Wikipedia, Procrastination is the act of unnecessarily and

voluntarily delaying or postponing something despite knowing that there will be negative

consequences for doing so. It is a common human experience involving delays in everyday

chores or even putting off important tasks such as attending an appointment, submitting a job

report or academic assignment, or broaching a stressful issue with a partner.
