Introduction:
Arabic is spoken in many countries of the world. It is very vast and broad language. Due its broadness
and vastness, it is not easy to learn it directly from the sentences and grammar. You need to learn the
Counting in Arabic also. Following is an easy way to learn counting in Arabic.

Rules for numbers 1 and 2

The numbers 1 and 2 always match the gender of the noun they qualify. That is, their form is
masculine with masculine nouns and feminine with feminine nouns. These are ‫ َو اِح د‬/‫ ِاثَْنان‬with
masculine nouns and ‫ اِثْنَتَان‬/ ‫ َو اِح دَة‬with feminine nouns, as in these examples:

‫ | يو م َو اِح د‬one day

‫ | ُح جَر ة َو اِح َد ُة‬one room

‫ | َج اَء َعاِلَم ان اِثْنَان‬Two scientists came

‫ | قََر أُت ِر َس اَلتَيِن اِثْنَتَين‬I read two letters
Remember: The numbers 1 and 2 in Arabic follow the noun they modify and agree with it in case and
gender.

Rules for numbers 3-9

For numbers 3-9, we use plural nouns, disagreeing with the gender of the noun, Nouns that follow
these numbers should be indefinite genitive plural, as in these examples:
‫ |َسْبَعةُ ُك ت ُب‬seven books
‫ | ِتْسُع َسَّياَر ا ت‬nine cars
Keep in mind that the numbers 3-10 are made masculine by just dropping ‘ta’, the feminine marker
from the end. (‫)ة‬

Just remember, the number has the opposite gender of the singular noun.

Rules of number 10:

When 10 is used alone (not compounded with 1 to 9), it follows the reverse agreement rule. If it is
compounded with 1 to 9, it must agree with the noun it precedes.

Note that for ‫ عشرة‬the masculine form not only drops the ‫ ة‬nuukus a gnittup seriuqer tubْ over the ‫ش‬,
so you get ‫َع ْش ر‬

‫ | َعَش َر ةُ أَْه َدا‬ten goals

‫ | َعْش ُر‬ten female players ‫ف‬
‫ََلِع َبا ت‬
The numerals associated with the Arabic numbers are summarized in the following chart:
