TAGOUT
TOOLBOX SAFETY TRAINING 01

ANY TIME YOU WORK ON
PIPING, VESSELS, OR
EQUIPMENT ALREADY IN
SERVICE, THERE IS POTENTIAL
FOR EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS.
HAZARDS CAN INCLUDE
GASES, LIQUIDS, ELECTRICAL
ENERGY, AND EVEN
MECHANICAL, SUCH AS A
ROTATING BLADE. 01
These hazards are why ARC Services has
a Lockout Tagout (LOTO) program. LOTO
prevents energy or hazardous materials
from getting to the working equipment. If
the system still presents a risk, then
something within the system was not
correctly purged or de-energized during
the LOTO. The LOTO must be confirmed
before repairs, maintenance, or service 01

starts.
When the word energized is used in
LOTO, remember that it does not just
mean electrical energy. Energy can also
come in multiple forms, including steam,
water, thermal, hydraulic, pneumatic,
stored, etc. At times, more than one form
of energy could be present, so having a
questioning attitude and verifying
01

assumptions should be practiced.

If walking down the LOTO, take the time
to ensure that all energy forms are
blocked or disconnected. You are
allowed to ask the LOTO owner questions
during the walkdown, as it is the owner's
responsibility to know the energy
sources and ensure that they are
blocked or disconnected. 01
All energy sources are to be placed into
the off position or disconnected, and a
lock and tag installed to keep the energy
source from reconnecting. Each person
on the LOTO will sign onto the log and
place a lock on the designated lockbox.
The original key is within the lockbox to
lock out the energy source(s). 01
Until everyone has removed their lock,
the energy cannot be restored. It is
against policy to remove another
employee's lock. Supervision may
remove the lock, but to do this, the
supervisor must complete a report
explaining why they were required to
remove the lock. 01
