Title: How to develop Glass Thermal Stress Analysis Discipline:
MATERIALS QA HS&E
ABSTRACT
This Technical Instruction defines the operative methods to develop the glass thermal stress
analysis and manage its related risks; it must be applied to all the projects of Permasteelisa S.p.A.
that envisages the use of glass.
The responsibility of TSA analysis correctness and the associated warranty for thermal stress
breakages shall remain to the supplier as a general rule and as defined by contracts.
ISSUE
Through the thermal stress analysis, the suitability of glass in all its characteristics (edges
machining, heat treatment, fritting, etc.) is evaluated and defined as per contractual requirements,
local laws and relevant standards.
ACTION
1. Preliminary analysis by Permasteelisa
Once the project has been awarded, the Tender Leader who has developed the offer of
Permasteelisa must collect all the documentation relevant to the TSA and provide it to Project
Design Manager (PDM) and Project Engineer (ENG) during handover phase; this includes:
any possible drafted thermal stress calculation already developed during tender;
construction drawings;
summary of the various types of glass for different facades;
reference standards or directives mentioned by Project Specifications.
02-HO-DOC\03-Tender-Doc\10-(TCR)
ENG develops the preliminary TSA (pTSA) to verify the adequacy of proposed glass in relation to
the risk of thermal stress failure and it archives it in the dedicated project folder:
12-CAL\01-TCR\05-(TCR)-TS
PDM fills in the Glass Typologies List (GTL) on the basis of the pTSA.
If the project scheduling requires the submission of TSA report to the Client prior the definition of
the glass supplier, ENG can submit the preliminary analysis calculations report informing that the
final TSA might be revised by the glass Supplier.
The glass supply contract requires the supplier to perform the TSA and forward the calculation
report within the contractually defined schedule.
Once the information contained in the documentation relevant to the TSA are verified against the
latest signed contracts, PDM shall define on their basis the TSA Input Data and send them to the
supplier for the development of TSA. The TSA Input Data, as minimum requirement, shall contain:
3. Analysis validation
Once the supplier delivers the TSA to Permasteelisa, ENG with support of PDM validates it through
analysis of completeness, consistency with project and evaluation of results.
In case of different evaluations between supplier and Permasteelisa, proper discussions shall be
entertained among the respective technical people to reach a common agreement; if required, a
third party could be involved in the discussions.
In case of no common agreement, PDM shall update the GTL and all reference documents with the
glazing specifications defined by the supplier.
Only by exception, subject to project specific situations and to General Manager approval,
Permasteelisa might undertake the risk of relying on its own calculation.

TSA have to be submitted for information to Main Contractor to record the design condition at that
time.
