Suggested study syllabus


The following is a sample 22-week outline to give you an idea of how a
syllabus could be constructed for this subject.

Weeks 1–2
Background reading on medieval history and critical surveys of the
period.
Topic study: the historical context (see Chapter 5 below).

Weeks 3–5
Author study: Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (the First Fragment). Practise
Section A questions.

Weeks 6–8
Author study: other Canterbury Tales and/or Troilus and Criseyde.

Weeks 9–10
Topic study: medieval drama (Towneley and Chester Noah plays) (see
Chapter 4 below).

Weeks 11–13
Topic study: women in the Middle Ages (The Book of Margery Kempe)
(see Chapter 6 below).

Weeks 14–15
Topic study: Medieval lyrics. Practise Section A questions.

Weeks 16–17
Author study: Langland’s Piers Plowman (see Chapter 2 below).

Weeks 18–19
Author study: Henryson’s Moral Fables and/or Testament of Cresseid
(see Chapter 3 below). Practise Section A questions.

Weeks 20–22
Revision. Practise one-hour timed questions to previous examination
papers.
