what happens when those threads begin to

Failure to Thrive?

than 5%, decreased appetite, poor nutrition,
and physical inactivity, often associated with
dehydration, depression, immune dysfunction,
and low cholesterol. Failure to thrive is not a
single disease or medical condition; rather, it's a
nonspecific manifestation of an underlying

combined with the deficits caused by the
disease can lead to geriatric failure to thrive.
From a legal standpoint, a failure to thrive
diagnosis can qualify a patient for hospice care
because failure to thrive can be a terminal

for an elderly person. The diagnosis should lead
to a discussion regarding end-of-life care

loneliness symptoms. Pair of loneliness with a
chronic illness and increased aging, and you
have a recipe for a downward spiral of geriatric
failure to thrive symptoms.
Geriatric failure to thrive is a syndrome that is
causing the deaths of countless senior citizens.
It's something that we can still diagnose and
treat if we catch it early enough. Failure to
thrive is not a normal part of aging or chronic
disease. So, we always have to apply the
geriatric failure to thrive label with caution.
Take time to figure out any underlying causes of
the symptoms because you can reverse these
symptoms with the right treatment.
When an older adult patient suddenly develops
the symptoms associated with failure to thrive,
it is often challenging to determine the cause of
the problem and for this reason, it’s vital that
nurses take action immediately to see a doctor
and report the problem if an elderly patient
appears depressed and is losing weight quickly.

When your loved ones receive a failure to thrive

decisions. You can intervene to maintain or
even improve that loved one's functional status.
You could also focus on controlling symptoms.

that individual stay comfortable and maintain

/Narration- Mga Nursing Responsibilities
The goal of treating geriatric patients with
failure to thrive is to improve their quality of life
and functional abilities. The best treatment
strategy takes a team or when we do NCPs, we
call it, collaborative approach and includes not
only the patient’s doctor, but also a nurse, a
dietitian, and a physical therapist along with a
social worker, mental health professional, and
when necessary, a speech pathologist. In
addition to nutritional therapy, patients with
FTT are often encouraged to engage in a certain
amount of physical activity. The combination of
physical activity and good nutrition are a
winning combination for patients with this
disorder. As a nurse, there are also nursing
responsibilities that came along with this
disorder one is the most important, preventing
any falls for the patient, preventing fluid
imbalances and pressure ulcer formation, and
all in all, promoting safety for our geriatric
patient. It is still a beatable disorder for our
geriatric population. For patients who are
experiencing Failure to Thrive due to different
circumstances in life, know that you are not
alone in this difficult situation you are in, and
always remember that there is hope, and care
in situations that you are facing.
