Q- Identify the incorrect statement about carbon isotopes:
a) C-13 is less abundant in vegetation than in oceans.
b) C-12 is most abundant in nature.
c) C-14 is absent in fossil fuels.
d) C-13 is used for carbon-dating
Note : carbon-14
carbon-14, the longest-lived radioactive isotope of carbon, whose decay allows the
accurate dating of archaeological artifacts.

Q. Among the following insecticides, which one is relatively more soluble in water?

a) Aldicarb
b) Carbaryl
c) Malathion
d) Aldrin
Q. The ionic species, O+ , O2 + and N2 + are found generally in

a) Troposphere b) Stratosphere c) Mesosphere d) Heterosphere

Note : The heterosphere is the layer of an atmosphere where the gases are separated
out by molecular diffusion with increasing altitude such that lighter species become
more abundant relative to heavier species.
Note : The chalcogens (ore forming) are the chemical elements in group 16 of the
periodic table. This group is also known as the oxygen family. Group 16 consists of
the elements oxygen (O), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), and the
radioactive elements polonium (Po) and livermorium (Lv).
Q. The Oxygen atom species, which reacts with water to form hydroxyl radical, is
produced by the photo dissociation of

a) O2
b) O3
c) NO2
d) H2O
Q. With increase in temperature, the specific conductivity of water

a) Remains unchanged b) Increases c) Decreases d) Makes the water turbid

Q. Percentage of tropospheric ozone in relation to total atmospheric
ozone is about

a) 90% b) 10% c)50% d) 80%

The dominant species, which removes hydroxyl radical in troposphere, is:

a) CH4 b) CO c) NO d) NO2
Note : In troposphere, daytime atmospheric chemistry is mainly governed
by hydroxyl radical (OH) which is primarily generated from photolysis of
ozone (O3) in presence of water vapor (H2O).

The troposphere is an oxidizing medium. The dominant oxidizing species in the

troposphere is the hydroxyl radical, OH.

CO+OH• → CO2+H•
Q. Which of the following statements is not true for the solubility of CO2 in seawater?

a) It increases with increase in partial pressure of CO2

b) It increases with increase in pH.

c) It increases with increase in temperature.

d) a & b .
Note : The solubility of carbon dioxide in pure water in the presence of CO2 gas
hydrate has been measured at temperatures between 273 and 284 K and pressures
ranging from 20 to 60 bar. It was found that the solubility decreases with decreasing
temperature in the hydrate formation region. In the absence of gas hydrate, the gas
solubility increases with decreasing temperature, but the hydrate formation process
changes this trend.

( Gas hydrates are crystalline solids in which molecules of a “guest” species occupy and
stabilize cages formed by water molecules.)
Q. Which of the following statements is true for an ideal dilute solution?

a) Solute and solvent both obey Raoult's law

b) Solute obeys Raoult's law and solvent obeys Henry's law

c) Solute obeys Henry's law and solvent obeys Raoult's law

d) Solute and solvent both obey Henry’s law.

Henry’s law

States that the amount of gas that dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that
gas above the liquid when the temperature is kept constant. The proportionality factor is called Henry’s law
constant.

Raoult’s law

States that a solvent’s partial vapour pressure in a solution (or mixture) is equal or identical to the vapour
pressure of the pure solvent multiplied by its mole fraction in the solution.
The reaction of OH radicals with which of the following Species generates
hydrogen atom?

a) CH4 b) NH3 c) CO d) NO2

Q. Night-time tropospheric chemistry is dominated by which of the following
radicals?

a) NO3 b) OH c) HO2 d) O
Note : The chemistry of the night-time atmosphere is dominated by
the nitrate radical (NO3). These nitrate radicals are formed from the
reaction of ozone (O3) with nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
Q. The vapour pressure of bromobenzene above its ideal dilute aqueous solution
of molality 0.1 mol kg-1 is 24.0 kPa. Calculate the Henry's law constant of
bromobenzene:

a) 240 kPa kg mol-1

b) 220 kPa kg mol-1

c) 460 kPa kg mol-1

d) 400 kPa kg mol-1

Henry’s law
States that the amount of gas that dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial
pressure of that gas above the liquid when the temperature is kept constant. The proportionality
factor is called Henry’s law constant.
