ASPHALT

WORKS SAFETY
Asphalt work is a critical component of our Transport and
Infrastructure construction projects, which involves a
number of key hazards. Work of this nature shall be
carefully planned, so it can be executed safely.

The following principles shall be applied, when planning and executing asphalt works:
• All traffic plans, method statements and risk assessments shall be reviewed and approved by
the Consultant
• Traffic management plans shall be developed and include but not be limited to; detours,
barriers , warning signs, traffic control measures, the timing of the loads from the
bitumen plant, the movement of the equipment to the site and the crew members needed for
the work
• Work zones, truck entry and exit points shall be clearly identified and communicated
• Competent traffic marshals shall be deployed to control the vehicle movements
• Pre-use inspections of equipment shall be conducted by the operator, ensuring mirrors
and visual aid devices are secured and operating properly, including backup alarms and
lights
• All plant and equipment shall be inspected, maintained and certified by a competent person
• All persons involved in the task shall be competent and proper supervision shall be provided
• Prestart briefings shall be conducted each day before works starts
• Adequate lighting must be provided in working areas
• A competent person is required to regularly verify the effectiveness of the controls to
safeguard workers and members of the public
• Handling and storage precautions outlined in MSDS (asphalt , bitumen) must be adhered to
• Never stand near the hopper when asphalt’s being discharged. Never move between
paving machine and backing trucks
• Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
