METHOD STATEMENT FOR RIP RAP STONE WALLS CONSTRUCTION

Page 13
CHAAR FOR CONTRACTING s.a.r.l. METHODS STATEMENTS

1- Work Methodology
 Arrival on site.
 Get to place of work. The area will be assessed to ensure a safe route is possible.
Vehicles will be parked in the correct location and where required High Visibility
clothing will be worn at all times.
 Steel toe capped boots will be worn at all times.
 Any equipment and stone brought onto site will be unloaded in a safe area and near
the area of work.
 An area for waste will be established and any waste materials generated will be kept in
this area. Waste materials will be removed off site by Chaar.
 Gloves will be worn when handling and transporting any materials.
 Plot out where the retaining wall will sit at the bottom of the slope, using stakes and
string for a straight terrace, a garden hose for a curved one.
 Foundations / footings may need to be dug. This will either be done manually by spade
or for large areas by mechanical digger. Only suitably trained operatives will use
mechanical equipment. Dig a trench in which the first course of stone will be fully or
mostly submerged. This will help the retaining wall withstand the pressure exerted on it
by the slope it is holding back. Compact well the base of trench before putting the
stones.
 Stones will be lifted into the correct position. Heavy or awkward shaped stones will be
lifted by two people.
 Stones may require some cutting. In which case a stihl saw is used. All operatives will
be suitably trained in using a stihl saw safely. Dust mask and eye protection will be
worn when using the saw.
 Terraces of natural stone are laid in "courses," that is, one horizontal row at a time.
The first course of stones will consist of the largest, widest, longest, flattest stones (but
save some for the final course, the "capstones"). They have to be the most stable
stones. Take the time to fit them as closely together as possible. Building terraces with
natural stone is like fitting the pieces of a puzzle together.
 In laying the next course of stones and those that follow, avoid lining up the joints over
the joints of the course underneath. Again, back-fill and tamp down after completing
the course. Also, tuck soil into the spaces between the stones wherever the fit is not
especially tight.
 The job may require cement to be mixed. In which case gloves will be worn. The
cement will either be mixed manually or by machine. If a machine is used then the
operator will be suitably trained to operate it safely.
 When almost have reached the desired height for the terrace, it is time to place the
capstones on top. "Capstones" are similar to the stones used in the first course, in the
sense that they should be very flat and have significant mass.
 Once the job is completed all waste will be removed from site
