Description of shaver
General Information
Power supply: Supply by means of one built-in rechargeable battery or by direct mains
supply. A built-in electronic charger controls the supply automatically, inde-
pendently of the mains voltage or frequency. A green control lamp serves as
a visible sign of charging operation start by impulse-charging at 12 V.
After maximum charging capacity has been reached, the electronic device
switches back to a compensating trickle charge, which maintains capacity.
A special charging cable with fuse is available, for use with outlets in car or
boats. The most favorable ambient temperatures for shaver functioning is
between + 15 °C and + 35 °C. By no means the temperature should be
below 0 °C or above + 40 °C when charging the shaver. When 80% of the
capacity of the rechargeable battery has been used, a red capacity-signal
lamp continues to light for 5 sec. after turning off the shaver, and operates
continuously during the entire shaving cycle.

Dismantling
• Remove cutter parts. Pull out 2 plug pins (35) and loosen screws (34).
• Remove end cap (33) and housing case (32)
• Push sliding plate with trimmer (11) into the extreme upper position, disengage
tabs on both sides and remove by sliding in an upward direction. Attention!
The flat spring (16) and the leg spring (17) can jump out.
• Remove insulating foil (36) and both luminous rods (24) from the chassis (18).
• Slide PCB (20) out of chassis (18) and un-solder the connection wire from the
motor (19).
• Remove circlip (7), cutter block support (8) with foam rubber seal (9), and conical
spring (10).
• Now, disengage cover (12) from chassis (18) and remove. To remove spring catch
(13), they have to be disengaged on the inside of the cover (12), by pushing with
a small screwdriver.
• Disengage circlip (27), and pull oscillating arm (28) with crank (29) from the shaft
Watch washers (26)! The crank (29) can be removed from the oscillating arm (28)
by a 90° turn.
• Loosen the 2 screws (25), and pull motor (19) downwards.
Reassembly
The assembly is carried out in reversed sequence. Attention must be paid to the following points:
• Lubricate the joints of crank (26) and oscillating arm (28) with silicon paste.
• Cover PCB (20) with insulating foil (36) and luminous rod (24).
• Install flat spring (16) and leg spring (17) according to drawing.
• The oscillating fork on the back of the sliding plate with trimmer should be center-
positioned. The sliding plate with trimmer (11) should be inserted straight from
above. The guide pins of the cover must be sliding in the channels provided for
in the sliding plate. Move slide plate, until a snap-action is audible.
Insert shaving parts. Check product for function. Finally push plug pins (35) into place.
Attention: With exception of the switch area the printed circuit board (20) is treated with a
special lacquer for protection against dampness. For safety reasons no repairs can
be made to the circuit board other than replacement of the switch (21).
Control of PCB
When connected to 220 V the shaver will draw 21 - 31 mA (3.5 - 4.5 Watt) (110 V, 47 - 57 mA).
Charge for approximately 5 minutes - the green diode must give a continuous light (not pulsate).
Unplug shaver from mains supply and measure voltage of each cell. The voltage of cell must be
minimum 1.2 V. If all above points are achieved then PCB is in good condition.

As from the 40th week of 1992, all Braun universal shavers for men will be furnished with
ecologically friendly batteries and all relevant PCBs to be used as spare parts will have this new
battery. This requires, with defective Ni-Ca-PCBs of vario 3 universal shavers, that the complete
chassis is exchanged.
The new PCB contains only one battery and, consequently, the PCB only fits the new chassis with
a 1.2 V-motor.
This also causes a different charging characteristic: After being fully charged the green charging
diode switches off.
Hint:
Before installing the rebuilding set, the locking part has to be removed from the chassis (see
sketch).
